So, if I separate each of those side polys (making a seam between each of them), you'd get 35 artifacts (I used a 36-sided cone).

...and just to clarify the above statement... I never checked having seams in the cap (which would be an unusual/uncommon way of mapping it), so it's possible that that might also cause the artifacting if there were seams in that - it's just not what I was testing.
