Just because this thread raised some questions for me, I ran this test. And to my eyes, I can't see the difference between the two images. I did turn smart light sampling off, and set quality to best, and the Hybrid rendered about 160% faster than the RayTracer. Maybe it won't work so well with animations, but for a still, it sure looks pretty good to me.
