Reset prefs. Repaired permissions. Ran disk tools. About the only thing I haven't done is re-installed. Works normally on an average-sized mesh (for me) but as soon as I get close to the detail level of a mil figure drops to an unusable crawl. One observation. While I was fitting a new outfit, as soon as I had most of the mil figure hidden under the new mesh I was constructing, the screen redraw kicked back up again. Was still slow as heck doing anything with vertex tools, tho.
