We recently interviewed the owner at TheBest3d.com, Philip Staiger, and have compiled a few of his responses below.

Renderosity Vendor Name: staigermanus

Country: USA

What are your software preferences? Project Dogwaffle of course, always 'Like' our own ;-), especially if it's effortless to do so.... but also: Amapi 3D 6.1 (never liked 7), Carrara, Anime Studio, Curvy 3D, Cyberlink PowerDirector, Pixelan AnyFX, N-sided Quidam, Sculptris, Audacity, SeaMonkey, Irfanview, Debugmode's Wink and Wax, oh and GameMaker for Uketutu, gotta love using a gamedev tool for making a non-game app!

Who or what inspires you? Dan Ritchie (project dogwaffle), Shlomi Mallachi (smart3d), the guy in Russia (I think) from 3d-Coat (Andrew?) and shame on me for not remembering his name at the moment, but just as my PC runs on RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read Only Memory), I seem to be operating increasingly on FOM (Forget-Only Memory).

There's also Splinegod finally in New Zealand, battling the odds against diabetes, Attila Kohl in Hungary who's insanely talented and battling cancer, and “Dr Petter” for creating Sculptris and keeping it free even after accepting a position at Pixologic(!),... oh and musicians like DJ d'Artagnan aka John Somnitz who almost made it to the Olympics, then eventually made it there through his music at the Torino Winter games (the One Project) and is now sadly battling MS (no, not Microsoft you silly, he's fighting Multiple Sclerosis); and Jose Luis Suazo aka 'eMaya' in Honduras who's managed to create music that puts me at ease and helps me rest, and Wheela for going against the odds and mounting a music label business from Jamaica. Way to go man, stick with your passion and instincts! Then there's also Stephen Wampler who was practically born in a wheel chair but achieved something I haven't even imagined: to climb Yosemite's El Capitan by hand in 15,000+ pull-ups, hanging in the wall for 6 days! Now that's inspiring!

How many years experience do you have within the world of digital art? You know, we all are eventually born and almost immediately thereafter get to see the two most beautiful things there are on the planet, and Renderosity is no different. Yes I do think God is a woman. I mean, hey, God is perfect, right? So there.

Well, I started drawing stick figures in kinder garten and I seem to recall winning a Kodak Instamatic Ectachrome 'ish camera in 1967/68 when France Gall was starting to make a real name for herself. In college I went for Electrical Engineering, but added a 5th year for majoring in Computer Graphics, realizing I didn't have the thing for designing bobbins.... and my fate was sealed. Happy, colorful pixels is what life is all about. 3D pixels, rectangular pixels, anti-aliased pixels, shapely pixels, layered pixels,.... ah the pixels, streaming pixels, pixels from outer space...

Do you have any additional comments? I get asked a lot, what's with the name, why Dogwaffle, what does it mean? What is a dogwaffle?

Ever went to college or left home for the first time in your life, just to realize that mom wasn't there anymore in the morning to fix you breakfast? Likewise, you may get your feet wet at something new: you may have a bright idea, a passion, a project, For example: the crazy urge and desire to create your own paint proggy, inspired by Deluxepaint from an era when “I have an Amiga” didn't mean you're dating a Latino,... it meant you had a V-PC, a Very Personal Computer!... but after a few weeks or months of programing, it just doesn't really look like much of a paint program.... so, back to breakfast without mom: Arm yourself, with a brand new toaster, try a frozen waffle... the first few times, I almost guarantee you that, it's gonna come out burnt and black and smoking, smelling like defeat and failure... that waffle is good for the dog, that's about it, that's a dogwaffle. But you know what? don't give up, keep working hard at what you believe. You'll learn to operate that toaster in your life. You'll fine tune your skills, your project will blossom. You'll become a self-taught amazement to yourself. And eventually, it'll be a waffle you can enjoy! As for your project, eventually, it's a program you can paint with.

Independent-minded, off the wall, creative, against the odds, very useful software, and great value. What's not to like? And it is also fun.

Having had previous individual experience of this product which I found exceptional for such a cool price, it will be interesting to see if its comeback has any residual appreciation.
