file_472551.jpgEach month the Renderosity community votes on the Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... September's AOM is JenniSjoberg!

We congratulate JenniSjoberg for an outstanding collection of works in the Poser Gallery!

Who is JenniSjoberg?

Who am I?  Well, I'm 35, live in the middle of Sweden and I like playing around with Poser. Although, when I first started here at Rosity, I went by the name Miyu, which was then my nickname at most places online. But, once I started to really get into the whole "making images" bit I decided to change my username to my real name instead. It just felt more "me."

How long have you been working in digital art?

I first started out doing a bit of Photo manipulations. This was somewhere in the late 1990's and the first time I picked up Poser was around 2002. But, I've had several breaks from it, usually for a few years at a time.

Do you have any traditional art experience?

No, not really. We had some art classes in school but I don't think those are really worth mentioning. I do wish I could paint properly though. I've tried a few times but usually it ends up very abstract.

Heart of Courage

What are you currently working on?

When it comes to Poser, I'm afraid I'm a very basic user. I really should explore the program more, but I'm quite fond of a more painted look to my images, and to achieve that I do quite a bit of postwork. Usually, I try to evolve my postwork process all the time. At the moment I'm trying to get the hang of merging a render with a background with ground and make them "fit" together. I've always tried to avoid backgrounds with ground before. Instead, I had background props in Poser make up the ground and just add a sky after. Now, I'm trying to work with backgrounds with ground. Blending becomes very important then and it's quite daunting at times.

What is in your digital toolset and why?

I use Poser propack 2010 and Photoshop CS.  I've often been asked why I render in Poser and not in a more advanced renderer, but I guess it's a matter of convenience. I know how to get the look I want from Poser, and since I'm not after a "realistic" style render, then Poser does the job fine. I've been using Poser since version 4, then upgdaded to 6, and now I'm using PP2010 (and don't have any plans to upgrade to 2012).  As for Photoshop, I've been using it since version 4, then upgraded to 5.5 and now I've been using CS the last 5 years or so, might be more, not sure. I would like to upgrade to CS3 or above, because there is this plugin I want that doesn't work with CS, but it will have to wait until I've saved up a bit of cash.

Jess the Immortal

What do you think your best piece of work is and why?

Oh, that's a tough one. The one I'm the most happy with at the moment would be "Jess the Immortal." I think that one came together better than I expected when I started it. But, if I think back on the image that I've been pleased with for the longest period of time it would have to be "Confined." I think the original of that is over 8 years old and I'm still quite content with it.

Who, or what, inspires you?

Usually music, especially "Epic music," it's the kind of music you hear in movie trailers and stuff. Two Steps From Hell and Audiomachine are definately stuff I listen to alot while making images. But movies, books, games and other artists inspire me as well.

What do you enjoy most about Poser?

Me and Poser have this love/hate relationship. Sometimes I'll swear and kick and threaten it, but usually we get along okay. I like that it's so easy to experiment with, especially with lighting and camera angles. It often can give you quite cool, but unexpected results with just the twist of a dial.

Do you have any tips you would be willing to share on the software you use?

Absolutely. Although, maybe not so much on Poser, as I'm not all that familiar with the more advanced features of it myself.  I do post links to walkthroughs of my basic workflow in some of my gallery images though.

Edge of the world

How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?

Oh, it has definately helped, but it's also slowed it down, but I think that might have been for the good in the end.

When I first started posting here, I mainly did Photo manips, but after seeing the amazing stuff people like ToxicAngel, Desdemona and SkoolDaze did in Poser, I got very curious about it and decided to try it myself.  I remember when I made my first image (which was basically just a render on a black background), I had to ask in the Rosity chat "How do I do this?" or "How do I get it to do that?," and people were always very helpful. There is alot of creativity and friendly people on this site, and that in itself is very inspiring. I really like the idea of a community like this one being a place where people can learn, improve and support each other.

Unfortunately, you always get some bad apples as well, and some of the drama going on at times has made me more or less quit making images for several years. But, I always tend to come back to it. Usually improving with every time I "quit," so maybe it's a good part of the process to have a break here and there... get some distance :)

Nowadays though, I try not to get involved in any of the constant "cliques" or comment traders. I generally keep to myself (although I do like to hang out in the Rosity chat from time to time) and try to not get mixed up in all that stuff that made me quit before, because I'm quite enjoying myself at the moment and I'd hate to see it end.

Rip the wings of a butterfly

Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?

Never be afraid to experinent and try new things. That's how you grow and evolve as an artist. And always remember to have fun!

Best regards

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.

Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.
