Description
That morning I woke and he was waiting outside for me.
"Come on, lets teach you to look after yourself" he smirked at me, instead of getting me to shoot at trees he lead me through the forest on the other side of my lake into an open pasture. He handed me three arrows and pointed out a rabbit to me "You have three tries, if you miss your picking those up, you can't hit it from here so you will have to get closer and hunt it before you shoot" he patted me on the back to get me going.
I lowered my stance using the grasses to hide my movements, I raised my bow slowly not to startle the rabbit, I drew back, the string was easier to pull than the other bow and it was lighter, my arms wasn't shaking as I unleashed my arrow, it missed but not by much, the rabbit ran. I moved and collected my arrow before resuming the chase, I drew closer to it again, this time I moved in closer drawing my bow before rising to take my shot, again it missed, the rabbit disappeared into the trees.
"I told you she is no hunter" he chuckled coming over and standing behind me, lifting the bow whilst in my hand and showing me the stance and positions I needed to take "let the bow be your eye and draw and release, don't hold it or think about releasing it, a natural action" he said moving my arms to show me what he meant. He pointed out another much larger rabbit "that should be better for you" once again I stalked it but took more time to get closer and corrected my technique to what he had just shown me. I unleashed again but this time the arrow found it's home, I looked over and he did a little clap "now pick it up and bring it back" he waved me to follow him as I ran and collected my first hunt.
We got back to the house and he showed me how to prepare it and cook it, slowly walking me through the entire process. "Now I know you can fend for yourself I can leave you today happier, though keep practicing, just in case you ever need to hunt anything else or protect yourself" I gave him the cooked rabbit as a gesture of thanks, he took it willing and hugged me before he headed back home "see you soon Evy" he said as he walked away.
After Maryc left the sorrow returned, I took the beer he had left and sat on my roof as the sun began to vanish behind the mountains.
I couldn't believe she had destroyed my home and the entire area it was in, why didn't she just come for me? Why did she have to destroy that entire area just to make her point and so spitefully attack me?
I sat back into the walls of my home, thinking about her gleefully killing everything, or at least she thought she had destroyed everything, everything but that one sole buttercup, a single glimmer of hope in an otherwise barren land. The thought of that little flower growing inside the floor of my old home serving as a reminder to her she had far from beaten me gave me a single smile.
I got myself down from the roof and went inside, I took off the green outfit she had given me, replacing it with clothes from my world and untied my hair from the bun she had put it up in which I had carried on ever since. "You are no part of me anymore" I said to myself looking at my little outfit, carefully folding it up and putting the shoes with it, I put it in the bottom drawer and closed it in with the lantern. As my hair unfurled into it's usual mess of curls, I swear I could hear my old boss bemoaning how much of a mess I looked, in my mind I shut him in that drawer with her.
From this night I was no longer "hers" I was going to be Evelyn again, I went back to that roof, the stars had come out in full and the world looked so different somehow. This world had given me so much and asked so little in return, my new family had taught me to hunt, look after myself, feel pride in myself, they had made me to believe in myself and given me so much love and affection and they had asked nothing in return. They made me believe in myself, for possibly the first time in my entire life, I believed I was capable of being something to someone.
I might be going completely crazy but maybe I had to repay them for their gifts and love? As I sat watching the stars thinking about my new family who had given so much to what was realistically a small, weak, former slave from a world which chews up people and spits them back out, I had to repay them. The Queen had looked after me like a child and taken me in as one of her own, Red had been a dedicated and caring sister, she had always been there for me, even when I really didn't deserve it. Maryc had made me tools to use and taught me how to use them and to boot he had kept an eye on me as I tried to get back home all that time ago, even lying to his mother to keep me safe. Scyla had brought me back to a family that wanted their little girl back, yes I had saved her but it was kind of my fault she got captured in the first place. All of them had done these things for no reason other than to provide me with a chance at life in a world I didn't belong too but they made me part of it without ever asking for anything in return.
That night I decided that once mother had come and left I was going to repay them for everything they had done for me. Mother wouldn't like what I had in mind but I knew she would understand and I knew she would support me doing it, even though it meant she might lose me entirely, I knew she would want me to do what I felt I had to do.
I would have to cross a boundary that I have never wanted to cross but I owed them that, my mind was set and just like when I crossed the ridge of those mountains coming back from my old world, there would be no turning back.

An excellent render! I like your beautiful character framed against that fantastic night sky in the background! I will confess to not yet reading the story attached to this awesome image...but soon will as time permits. Well done! :-)
