Description
This is a thatched hut on the battlefield of Culloden. This was the final confrontation of the 1745 Jacobite uprising, taking place on April 16, 1746. The battle pitted the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart against an army commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, loyal to the British government. Note how a pole and two ropes are holding down a damaged portion of the thatched hut. Zoom to check out the thatched roof and stone work.
I have to explain a comment on my last posting. I hiked the Scottish Highlands and the Great Glen which included the town of Spean Bridge. I met an older Gaelic couple. I was having trouble understanding the Scottish accent and Gaelic was killing me. Another couple sent their 10 year old daughter over to translate. Traveling is such an education. Both families joined me for lunch and stories went on for over an hour. Life is good. This was a solo vacation and the moors are no place to be sleeping on the ground. Magik made me chuckle. Sounds like a very remote holiday :o) I know 2 brother, they live in Scotland, actually next door to each other. I can understand what one says but the other, no way. I just not & say yes :o)

As Andrea says a classic building, not the best thatching and it needs some urgent repair most of the thatching in the southern part of the UK is done with corn stalks or if you want the best reeds, as for fires all the roofs I have seen inside were boarded and are probably no more likely to catch fire than an ordinary roofs. This building is likely only used by shepherds when on hills or as a store.

Great capture and great story Dana. I remember crossing the Minch from Ullapool to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, and while on the ferry I looked the the chart posted. As I was looking at the chart, I realized that this is Russian? or maybe Greek? There Russian factory ships anchored in Loch Broom, but Russian on this fery. I fanally realized it was Gaelic. I can image your challenge talking with these Gaellic speaking people. Didn't see any straw covered buildings or huts in Scotland, but saw some in Ireland.
