Description
The M46 Patton medium tank was an upgrade of the M26 Pershing heavy/medium tank. (The Army changed the designation after WWII.) A new engine, transmission, improved 90mm gun, and other changes fixed the problems found in the M26. The M46 served in Korea where it was well liked by the crews. It would continue the line of tank development begun with the M26 and lead to the M47 Patton tank.
The wild "tiger" paint job was a strange development of the Korean War. It seems to be a personal expression of the tank crews on M4 Shermans as well as the M46. No two faces, claws, or teeth were the same. Perhaps influenced by "shark faces" on WWII aircraft, some historians say the tankers thought the scary faces turned their tanks into monsters that frightened the peasants in the Chinese Army. Perhaps, but enemy soldiers were probably more worried about the 90mm gun. If I were the tank platoon commander I would be worried about the high visibility and gone back to good old Army green

Excellent photo and info. I was always a little hazy on the evolution from M 46 to M 47 tanks, now I have a much better idea, thanks!

Look out, there's a tank about! I suppose you'd have to have complete air superiority before you could wheel that out. Battle orders would be something like: "Go and scare 'em to death."

Mmmm? Not sure about that scheme there, you're right Rog. But, maybe the fact North Korea / China had less armour (certainly early on) than the Allies, scary against infantry worked! The Patton was a very good tank, while not a chieftain it was by far a better tank than the Soviet equal.. That colour though... Well... Rob
