It turned out to be a sturdy oak that lived for nearly five hundred years. But it was still a tree and one day it died, and he was released. In five hundred years things had changed very much. The Fae had passed to another dimension and a new people ruled the isle. They were descendants of the northmen, but they were invaders that had come from conquered lands in France that their ancestors had won.
From then on, the man made his way through life using his magic when he could, but otherwise leading a secluded and simple life. For the next thousand years he kept and eye and an ear out for her and even managed to contact some of the Fae, but it had been centuries since she had been seen. But now it seems she found him.
“Merlin.” She almost breathed the word out. He had not heard that name in fifteen hundred years said to him.
“Morgan.” He breathed back.
They moved close, she held her right hand up to him and from her left a glowing sphere appeared. He reached his left to her right and held up his glowing staff. They touched and all the thoughts and memories of centuries passed between them. His friend looked up with great curiosity at this new person. He was cautious but did not sense any threat in her. After several moments passed the glow died down slightly and they let their fingers intertwine. Words were not necessary, they had both opened up their thoughts fully to each other.
It was time to move on finally, Merlin realized. This world was not his to worry about anymore. There were little his talents could do to save it without bringing down the military and scientists to dissect him and try to weaponize his abilities. Even with Morgan by his side, their power was great, but he did not want to be a part of wars of politics and religion anymore. These modern humans would have to figure out their own way now.
