I'm working on a portrait studio for Poser at the moment, specifically aimed at the more recent SuperFly render engine.
The great thing about SuperFly is that it works exactly like real light, and with the right lights exactly like real studio photography.
The product will include a useful tutorial about the photography basics like composition, (3D)camera settings and lighting techniques
which I learned at my photography study 10 years back. This is one of the example portraits from the tutorial.
I hope you like it.

Works well for studio lighting if you want to make studio portraits and figure studies. Carrying these methods to complex scenes places you in the realm of stage lighting which I can tell you from experience typically requires dozens of lights including separate lights for the actors and the scenery. In either case it is about how to create the illusion of 3D forms in a 2D medium.
@Mazzam. You're right, if you want to light a massive indoor scene then you'll need a lot of light sources because each light "fades away" so to say. It's not always bad though to have less illuminated parts in your scene, it might even add more contrast and mystery to an image, and shadows add to the perception of depth.
