Description

There are worse things than breaking radio silence... December 10th, 1941. South China Sea. Two days after Pearl Harbor, the shadow-boxing with the Japanese invasion fleet crawling toward Malaya was over. Forze Z, built around the battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse, had been under attack by waves of land-based bombers for an hour. Prince of Wales was already crippled, its advanced AA fire control systems unable to cope with tropical conditions, when Repulse's captain, William Tennant did what his admiral seemed incapable of doing, he broke radio silence and requested air support from their abandoned fighter screen. But soon after that his zig-zagging battlecruiser got mortally wounded by a pattern of aerial torpedoes and went down with great loss of life. Ten Buffalos of 453 Squadron RAAF arrived in an empty sky just as the last of the pair, the ruined 'Prince of Wales,' rolled over and sank. Summoned too late, the fighters could do nothing but circle the oil-blackened ocean while crowded destroyers edged through the mess of oil and debris from the two capital ships, gathering more survivors... It was the first time that aircraft alone had sunk capital ships at sea. Of course it wasn't over yet. War in the Pacific was just two days old and the survivors were bound for Singapore... and supposed "safety." Rendered in Vue 8 Esprit The Brewster Buffalo is my model with some further tweaking of the 453 Squadron texture. The "oil slick" is a flattened metablob object with a volumetric "smoke" material Here Beyond VR's WW2 destroyer represents the destroyer screen

Excellent render and telling of a tragic loss of life. During WW2 the navies of the world really had it brought home to them that the days of the Battleship as ruler of the seas was well and truly over due to long range aircraft flying off carriers and submarines. Fine Brewster Buffalo model too!

Terrific sense of the expanse of airspace and ocean real estate involved in these encounters. Great lighting to boot!

A great historical scene. BeyondVR's destroyer, battleship, and liberty ship are awesome.

Yes! well! Singapore, an almighty battle that really should not have been lost, even with the limited air cover.. The Allied troops based there, out numbered the Japanese vastly! And IF they had fallen back to prepared defense lines (which were not prepared in time!) they would have held them off and quite possibly defeated them.. As for the lose of these fine strong capital ships, they could have mad an almighty mess of the Japanese invasion troop carriers, IF they had air cover, but they did not! And thus.... A stupid waste! They could have been held in Singapore and used as fire platforms.. The firepower they would have given and the range... Well.. Stupid! So bloody stupid! Great render.. Rob

Didn't help that the Brewster Buffalo was horribly under powered. A bigger engine might have enabled their pilots to meed the Zeros on more equal terms.
