I used to write my own wet shaders in C++ for Carrara, they were acting like plug-ins actually, but Carrara's rendering engine was a "biased" rendering engine - even it is said, more or less all rendering engines, thus the unbiased as well, are a little bit biased. The only problems with those was the low sampling resolution for the ray hits. You can imagine that like a rougher effect not a highly sampled, smooth one. Basically that shader used the Markov chain theory to get some useful values for the absorbing tensor space but parsing low sampling - as I mentioned before - led to rougher results. The first version took ages to render, I remember I was waiting awake 5 days for half a screen to get rendered, so I could get it later optimized. The latest version I managed to make, it worked within few minutes but, it took me a while to achieve that. Iray is an unbiased rendering engine, we are actually building the shader with premade bricks. You didn't expect we could implement our own parallel computed algorithms, I assume. So, we shall actually stick to "programming" with prebuilt blocks, anybody interested can do. If you are interested, we can later talk about it.
