The Barbary ground squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) was introduced to Fuerteventura from the African Spanish colony of Ifni as a household pet in 1965. Having escaped they have thrived in a natural environment similar to their homeland. Without predators however, their numbers have increased to an estimated 300,000 and are now a threat to the island’s endemic species.
Its erradictaion is seen as impractical on Fuerteventura, with efforts concentrated on its spread to other islands (Gran Canaria and Lanzarote)

They're beautiful creatures. Too bad it is so easy to upset the balance of nature. This is a very nice, characteristic pose. The background colors go so nicely with the animal.

They are so cute! I can easily imagine wanting them as pets. Excellent capture!
