'Hadron?' Winslet spoke up. 'I wonder if you could tell me what happened with your flight and why we had to walk these last few hours?'
Hadron's lids went up and Winslet could see the fire reflecting off large glassy orbs. What should have been the whites of his eyes were actually light blue and the iris, was shades of blues, purples and reds. He gave a soft huff, stoking the fire a bit from his proximity to it and tilted his head up a bit, arching his snakelike neck. He started his answer with a question.
'Have you ever seen a creature that had arms, legs and wings that was not magical in nature?'
Winslet thought on this and was reminded of her bio-magica classes back at Wizard Spring. This field was not one of her strong suits.
Hadron continued when he saw the distant look form on Winslet's face. 'Normal creatures have four limbs, even those that fly. Dragons of our kind are the result of ancient Divine creation which allows us our extreme physiology. When a dragon flies, it is actually putting some of it's mass into an alternate plane. This allows for a lighter body and actually makes us even more invulnerable to normal weapons. In this region, access to these planes and energy fields are impossible, thereby making my full weight subject to Erath's natural forces. With out magic, few dragons could fly for very long or at all. My father, the massive Goroth Mons, would be land bound without this 'magic'. Even Emagean would likely have trouble getting aloft.' He paused and looked up, 'Gliding from great heights for some distance might be possible, but the landing would be a rough one.'
This all made sense to Winslet and she recalled some of this from her teachings. This related to many things apparently magic. Winslet realized that, in fact, it was through the ethereal plane that this was achieved. A dragon or other flying magical creature must exist partially in the shadow side of the ethereal while in flight, also making that part invulnerable to affects from the prime world. 'Ahh yes. I understand. I took it for granted having never really thought about that before.'
Hadron harumphed. 'And you are a sky mage?' he said without hiding the sarcasm.
Winslet took that personally and responded antagonistically. 'Look, know it all, I specialize in storms and flight, not animal biology. So, I learned something new today, don't think you are a know it all. You said you didn't even realize the nature of your partner Alira Zell.'
Hadron rumbled and hissed at that. His head rose high and looked down upon Winslet. He did not disguise his anger at this affront. 'ANIMAL biology?! And YOU know nothing of Alira Zell.' He gnashed.
Winslet immediately calmed, but did not back off. 'I had a friend that was a Monk of Mao Shin who is now dead because of you two. And you spent some months terrorizing the central lands killing people and destroying towns and villages. How can I accept that you admire Ertha or want to go against Asmodeus?!' Her voice picked up as she went on.
Hadron sniffed and a rumble from deep in his gullet rolled over and sounded of distant thunder. Winslet wondered if his ability to project energy bolts from his mouth was ready and working. 'Was that magic?', she wondered. Hadron's eyes formed a scowl as he looked upon the diminutive human from his perspective. He eventually got control of himself. 'You must know the whole story if you are to understand the events of last year. You judge and yet, you your self are not innocent in your life, just lucky.' Hadron grated.
Winslet, emboldened more, simply said, 'Enlighten me.'

'My foster father, Vedrig Khan, was a great and respected leader of our clan, but it soon became clear to my mother, that Vedrig could not sire an offspring. This would put the clan in jeopardy because another ruler would have to be chosen and the only real choice was Moztra, whose actions were governed by pure self interest. True blue dragons live for each other and to promote the well being of the clan. Vedrig was sent by the Supreme Leader to try to gain back lost land in the north when it was taken from us in an old war with the Metallics led by Emagean's great, great grandfather. Vedrig believed in that mission and attempted to exert his influence in southern Neuwaullen. He went to war against the bronze dragon Brandis and the people of that land.' 'Meanwhile at home, my mother fretted over Moztra gaining power. But someone came along who had an idea. Ertha. Ertha encouraged my mother to go to Goroth Mons, despite that it was forbidden, and have him sire her a dragonling. In desperation she agreed. Ertha could keep it a secret from the other blues and Goroth Mons' sexual appetite could be used against him. My mother was considered very beautiful among dragons.' Winslet just shrugged, she could not judge such things. 'Before Vedrig left, he and my mother were together and as soon as he left, Ertha arranged for the time between Goroth and my mother. None were the wiser. Tragically Vedrig was slain by Brandis and never returned, but it was declared that my mother was seeded before he left. Vedrig would never know the betrayal. ' ' After my second emergence from Chrysalis others suspected what I was, but it could not be proven. I was larger than any blue of that lifestage, and other physical traits were becoming notiecable. In the midst of my sub adult life I left the clan because of the constant challenges from the others. After several years of isolation and wandering in the wastes of the end of the Barrier Mountains, I found a place to settle and soon met Alira.' 'I made a place for myself near an ancient and abandoned Mage tower. I formed a loose association with the gnolls that lived there. I helped them and they could retrieve old books from the tower. Eventually Alira showed up after being cast out of Mao Shin's order, of which her half brother was the leader. She was brilliant and we shared a similar story of being cast outs. Something I feel you can relate to.' Winslet did relate and she thought about how Ertha had told her and Brigit, that every one of the Elemental Emissaries had been a cast out of some sort. However Ertha never revealed her or Sirenia's story. Hadron continued. 'Alira took over the tower and formed an alliance with the gnolls and gathered others to her side. She was a bright and powerful mage and soon she discovered the truth of the Orbs of the Dragons. The Orbs could control the Chromatics without question, but an infiltrator corrupted them to influence the Metallics as well. You already know that story. I wanted to help her find the Orbs so they could be destroyed. Anyone who harbored knowledge of the orbs was an enemy in my eyes. Alira had fed me half truths and partial information that I could not confirm. But I'd trusted and believed her. She said how she was to be inducted as an Elemental Emissary, as I mentioned earlier, and that gave to me a sense of higher purpose. The two of us would be responsible for the destruction of the Orbs.' 'After we found the first Orb and she did not want to destroy it, I harbored some suspicion, but I still trusted her. When we entered Aehus Mons or any of the other towns and villages, I announced our arrival with lightning. Anyone who died was collateral in my eyes. They were an enemy concealing a weapon that could destroy my kind. But Alira went in and tortured and slaughtered to get her information. In the end I was appalled and tiring of her methods, but then we finally had one of the Orbs. You know how the rest of that story goes. I had bonded with Alira, so there was a connection between us. I saw through her eyes the day she died. Then I was broken, but what I learned later, I now seethe at that memory. I wish I'd killed her myself.'

The detail you put into this story is worthy of Tolkien or Lewis - an excellent read! And of course the art supporting your story is top notch all the way, Arthur! The campfire light is just perfect! An awesome chapter!

"Oh thank goodness, something to read!" Finished the book I was reading about 2 hours ago (was starting to have some serious literary withdrawal pains). Great chapter, great render, with exceptional lighting!!

What a great story, Arthur!! It's awesome and so is your image. There ARE always two sides to stories - at least. It's quite interesting to 'hear' Hadron speak of these things, and sort of catches me up on stuff I missed. Love it!!

Took me a Brooklyn IPA and half a Barley Wine to carefully get through every word of this. It really is like reading a chapter in an engrossing book. The imagery is also fantastic and must be from later in this chapter as Winslet is deeply engaged in thought as she listens to Hadran's story. No doubt she will have greater empathy for him and what he has suffered now. The fire light looks good and it has a beautiful fall off.

Very nice scene, beautifully lit by the fire and moon. Bravo!
Swidhelm () 3:45AM | Mon, 16 January 2012
Very cool. The dynamic cloak is a nice touch. I like how you have essentially opposite personalities forced together in isolation. I haven't read all your work so I don't know the back story, but the dynamic is interesting. I've taken to composing themes for my main own characters, and story elements. Working on an Overture now. Tedious :P

Like the draping of the cloak. The light reflection from the fire onto her face is perfect! That is some story!!
