As the day turned to night, we sat on the walkway.
He was so gentle, he carefully guided me to the step of my house to sit with him and discuss things, he gently invited me down holding my hand as I lowered myself down to speak with him, he was like the typical dream prince from children's films.
He turned down my wine for some beer that the hunters carried "Red told me all about you" he began, he was softly spoken as he told me his tales "We have been good friends since my mother adopted her, we should have been married but she chose her path and I chose mine, but we are still good friends, we talk a lot and about everything" I looked across to him "she has been good to me too, she always was good to me" I said back "she's beautiful too" he looked at me smiling "she is certainly a good looking woman, my mother loves her very much too as she does you too" he said softly.
He offered me a try of his beer, it felt rude to refuse, I took a sip, it wasn't awful in truth, he knew it wasn't my thing, he wryly smiled and began softly "We have met before you know? I met you in the hallway, though, you looked very different then, of course we met in the forest too, your home, we met a few times there didn't we" he chuckled. "The Green Devil" I chuckled back "Well nearly, there is a little bit of that story which only I know, you must keep this to yourself! you promise me?" I looked over at him "Of course I do" I said back.
"You remember the night you scared me away from the Hollow?" I nodded back, leaning in to hear what he was going to tell me. "My hunters had been petrified by what they claimed was stalking them around those trees, of course that night you scared me too, the sunlight caught your hair it looked like you had set the entire sky on fire as you looked down on me from those trees, you scared me more than even Red does that night! I set down to sleep by that big tree in the forest, of course I didn't know that you had made this tree your home. As I laid down and looked up there you were, illuminated by night sky looking right at me as you sat in the braches of that tree, I got startled to the point I just ran away, I swore you chased me out with your lantern aglow in the night, following my every step" He was smiling as he recalled this tale to me.
"I had gotten so lost wandering the woods in total darkness that I found myself seeing your light again, but this time it wasn't moving? I thought it must be a trick but I had to go investigate as I approached your tree again the light still didn't move, as I came nearer there you were. You had laid down by your tree, your little lamp keeping you company, you had eaten everything out of my bag that I had dropped, you were so content looking. Mother and Red had said they had lost a girl in the forest, they were desperate to find you, and there you were dreaming at the foot of the tree you made home, I wanted you to wake so I could see your eyes and ask what you dreamed about, you looked so happy, I sat and watched your eyes flutter as you dreamt. You were no devil, you were small yes but a beautiful woman and the smile on your face as you slept by your home tree was so blissful, you didn't look like you came from any world"
"Instead of taking you back to them, I left you there, instead telling my hunters to offer gifts to that tree to keep the demons of that forest away. In my mind you would be terrified by Red or my mother, after-all you were an escaped slave at that time as far as you knew, so instead of helping them find you, I would help you survive and get to the mountains, this was my mothers plans after-all, my hunters would gift you food and you had my little bag to take something with you, when you headed to the mountains. I kept my eye on you and eventually when you started to head to the mountains I followed you, keeping far enough away so you wouldn't notice but close enough that I could help if you got in trouble. I remember that storm the night before you went over the mountains, the whole sky shook that night, I bet you had a awful night in that tree trunk" I looked at him as he finished, "you knew the whole time?" he shook his head smiling "not the whole time, just after I found you asleep, you weren't the monster people thought, just a hungry girl, sleeping and living in the woods, following people who might give or leave food" I looked back at him and laughed "I remember stuffing my face with everything from that bag and passing out"
As he had shared with me I responded in kind "Red warned me not to go back but I couldn't resist, I hadn't seen my Hollow in summer and wanted too, the last time I saw it was the day I went back and got my stuff before I met mother" he swapped my wine for his beer at this point "I was looking forward to seeing my Hollow but I couldn't take my bow as it got caught up in the trees, it turned out I didn't need it anyway but I wasn't ready for what she had done to my Hollow"
He sat listening intently to my words, never interrupting my story "She destroyed everything, she killed every bit of life in that Hollow I called home, my tree she blew to pieces, she killed all the ferns and all the trees leaving an enormous hole in the forest. I know I have this wonderful land to call home but that's where I learned to survive this world and where I came back too after I returned from my world. All of it was gone, I sat touching the trunk of my former home, I couldn't stop myself crying, I found a little buttercup, I planted in the remains of my home"
"She had put in two shackles ready for me when she catches me" I offered him the note she left, he read it "I left that buttercup to tell her that she hasn't broken me and that she can't kill my home or my spirit" he looked at me considerately "she really has it in for you, though destroying that entire piece of forest seems desperate?" I looked out to the sky "I couldn't have let her kill Scyla, I would rescue her again even if I knew I would be killed, I can't believe she destroyed that entire place just because she couldn't find me to exact her anger upon. All those trees, plants and animals that have suffered for her anger" He placed his hand on my shoulder "She seems scared, you are stronger than her, she doesn't like it" I looked at him "No, I'm not stronger, I just can't let someone suffer for my sake, I loved her you know, I thought she saved me but, I think she actually just wanted to use me to get at our mother, when I took Scyla from her that is why now she might come for me over mother?"
"Did she really have to destroy everything, that was my home when my world rejected me" He felt my sadness as he offered counsel "Red told me about this part of you, I know that you feel sorrow for what you have lost, this I cannot relate too, I have never lost anything that important to me. It wasn't just a tree, it was your home, even though you now have here and your family it can't take away the pain of losing a place that meant so much to you" I looked back over to him as he thought "You think I will have to become a killer?" he paused thinking "I hope not, I couldn't be a killer and I suspect it won't be a natural thing for you either, unless you have no other choice" I sighed back "I hope it doesn't happen, but if I have to save someone from her" he held onto me, leaning me into his side.
He looked back sighing "tonight we put these thoughts behind us and tomorrow, we better teach you to use that bow of yours, the Green Devil might become even more dangerous" he smiled refilling my beer. He stood up and went and got the blankets from the bed and placed them on the ground nearby the wall of the house, he waved me over, I was pensive so he came and picked me up putting me down softly next to him and wrapping me in the blanket. "The berries are larger this year, that normally means a cold winter, I need to know you will be able to provide for yourself if you have too "Evy" the snow might cut us off from you if it comes, though it will be beautiful here it it snows" I paused "Evy?" he put his hand behind my back "Evy, my little sister" he pulled me into him, as we watched the stars together.
