Description
"It was during the Titon Colonies' war?" Eve asked. JS cocked an eyebrow in her direction. "Gila told me something about it. Mariko said it was a nasty thing."
"It was." JS nodded.
"Go on with your story, I always appreciate a good payback." Eve hugged him. "I think this is good."
"What? The payback?"
"Talking."
After mumbling something like 'Talking is overrated' JS went on with his story:
'When we got back to our base, Niko whose own clothing was burned from a few close calls, was quite pissed off:
"Badu, you had to cover us not to try to kill us! You're right, Kid?" He asked, turning to me.
"Kid?" Eve asked.
"I was 18," and answering to Eve's questioning look, JS added: "I enlisted rather early."
"We are ordered to stir riots, and that I did!" smugly Badu retorted.
"Yes, but you were fucking everything off. That's why I am in charge and you aren't. Kid had a set of balls on him and presence of mind enough to save the day. SOP is not to shoot civilians if your mates are less than 50 yards away. Nail it in mind, Badu!"
Badu turned to me: "Just a bad hit, Sea."
"I've a hard time believing that," and I punched him hard smiling unflappably.
"Clean up everything! We go away from here!" Niko ordered stopping Badu's fist.
JS fell silent, tense. Eve kissed him tenderly.
"Badu is a murderer, Eve. I've killed a lot of people too, but always in the service. Badu, no. He killed when he felt like it: prostitutes, people crossed in bar-brawls, even mates, but the powers that be hushed everything up. I was sick of it all, so I decided to provoke him and get it over with him.
A night we had to march 20 miles I sabotaged his boot heel. When we reached the new shelter, he was noticeably limping and furious.
"Fix your boot or I'll leave you here." Niko said.
"Sea, gimme your boots!" shouted Badu.
"Fuck off!" I replied.
"Kid has nothing to do with your shit, Badu." Niko stated.
"Go out and grab a dead man's boots!" Mia backfired.
Badu spitted at her. So we started our sly mean war.
Badu would bully newcomers or anyone who seemed weaker. If a poor sod complained, he had an accident. Yet no "accident" could bugger me. Mine, instead, were more effective. Badu was fuming and at the end he was focused more on our little fight than black ops against Titon settlers.
We climaxed when, during an action, Badu hit Mia's arm instead of me, so Niko decided it was time to get it over with.
"Badu stop harassing the lad. You're fucking up all our work." Niko hurled at him.
"Well, it looks like I made you get stuck with the shitty end of the stick!" I grinned. "That's what's really got a corn cob up your ass about me, Badu, isn't it?"
"And you stop provoking him, Kid!" Then Niko looked at us and made his decision. He planted two knives on an ammo box saying: "You're willing to go for the jugular, aren't you? So sort things out once and for all. In our line of work there's no room for sloppy jobs."
The others made a circle whispering bets on us. We grabbed the knives assuming an alert stance both of us thinking 'Shall I rip the bugger before he has a chance to hit me?'. I felt elated. There was something rather satisfying about a fool mood, and I decided to indulge mine completely.
"You're crazy, Sea." Badu muttered reeking of fear.
I spotted a gap in his deadly stance and went in. I was rewarded by the pleasant soft sound of the steel ripping his flesh.
I stopped my blade a few millimetres from Badu's heart, and said:
"If only you breathe, you're dead."
Badu stood stiff as a marble statue. He raised his pinkie to ask grace. His hair had turned white.
"Enough, JS." Niko called me JS from then on. "Badu isn't worth your career. Now you're the second in command."
Later he asked me: "Where did you learn that thrust?"
"On Gray 9. The Grays teach it to Riky eggs hunters."
Niko looked at me with respect: "You survived Gray 9? Then here it's a piece of cake."
