I used the California Ground Squirrel as an ID for this little fellow. The Yosemite web site lists 35 different rodents living in the park. I know that this is not a beaver or a porcupine so that is my best guess. They were cute and scampering all over the place begging for food. If I remember correctly this photo was taken up in the Glacier Point area about 3,200 feet (975 meters) above the canyon floor. Photo taken in the 1990s and recently scanned. It is a good zoom.
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments.
They are very much appreciated.

I think you made a great guess seeing as he is a squirrel and he is living in a ground hole. :) Great capture of him peeking out at you. :)

Looks like a ground Squirrel to me, when they call out a warning they make a high pitched chirp - I always think its a bird. Very cute capture!!!

Well, that certainly is well seen and captured! There are some here out at the lake but they are soooo shy and run away, so no photo ops.

Cute little guy! The head and color make me think of the gray squirrels we have here in New Hampshire! Nice shot!

Ah, one of those FAST little fellows! And not so scared of people. But, they have a very hard bite when cornered or disappointed. I saw them at Yosemite, but they're in San Francisco, too. Nice photo of this fellow. Surprising he sat still long enough for the photo. Keep up the good work! :-)

Looks like a squirrel, and it's in the ground, so I say that makes it a ground squirrel ;) Lovely shot!

Its a great capture whatever it is. Probably a common gray squirrel but it could be the Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel. See it here: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2158145&np

What a cute guy, you captured perfectly how he is looking out of his hole. That was certainly not easy in this bright light. A superb shot!
