Day had turned to night as I sat with my Hollow, it's battered husk starting to glow under the moonlight, it was a glorious night, so clear and the moon was the brightest I had ever seen it, I saw a figure walking towards my hollow, I recognised her instantly.
She stood at the foot of my Hollow, her white hair glowing in the light, she had a strange looking green dress, she sort of looked like a fairy from a cartoon?
She pressed her body to the tree looking up at me, her smile aglow in the night "You need some company?" she said smiling, she didn't wait for my answer as she started to ascend to get to me "this is hard work, you are better at this than me and you're injured!" she chuckled as she struggled to get higher.
I put my hand out for her, she took it as I pulled her the rest of the way, she was determined I had to give her that, "I hope I haven't interrupted you Evelyn, but I didn't like the idea of you being left out here alone, given what has happened recently I thought some company might be a nice thing?" she was pensive while she said this. I looked at her and could see her fears "in truth I wouldn't mind sharing tonight with someone", her face lifted as I said this to her.
She sat in the branch with me, leaning up against the trunk, she was a strange girl, her skin was incredibly pale and her hair was white, she looked very unusual, beautiful, but in a very different way. I sat towards the edge of what remained of the branch, the moon had risen and it was a very bright and beautiful night.
She looked out over the forest as she spoke in a soft tone "She loves you very much you know" as I went to speak "No Red I mean" she looked at me and eased herself back to talk to me "She told me all about you, how much she cared about you and how she was worried you wouldn't wake up" she turned to the moon as she continued "she was so proud when she spoke about you living out here, all alone and how your world rejected you so you came back from your world to be out here in this tree, she is very proud of you and she cares about you a lot" I looked at her as she said those words "I have been very lucky in this world, luckier than I was in my own, Red has been a good friend to me, I love her too" I said back.
"She tricked everyone you know, not just you, Her I mean, she made all of us believe that the Queen and Red would be merciless if we ever set foot near that camp, they would torture us and kill us. When Myra came back carrying her after she laid her down she pleaded with me to help her come make sure you got back to the Queen, I was so scared of what they might do if we entered that camp, but I agreed to come along. When we couldn't find you Myra insisted we had to look near the camp, as we headed there and saw that altar you had told Myra about in the cave there sat Red, sitting on that altar her head down but her hair illuminated by the moon. Myra asked her if you had come back, she didn't really speak but we knew you had gotten back, we approached Red sitting in a pool of your blood on that altar. She was very different to how we had been told she was, she guided us towards the main camp, keeping others away from us and leading us to the room where you were recovering with the Queen. She sat there with you in her arms, your neck was purple where she had tried to strangle you and you were bruised all over your body from the shards of clothing you had left. Once again she was no monster like we had been told, she gave us a room to stay in even allowing us to come and check up on you as you recovered" she was looking to the floor in shame as she spoke, I put her hand on mine.
"All the lies she told us, she made an entire tribe want war continually over something that just wasn't true, I guess she couldn't handle Red being more loved by the Queen than her maybe, she hated Red with every fibre of her being, but Red came and spoke with us when we were in that room, she's quite a funny person" she looked across at me her sadness replaced with a small smile. "She looked after me when I was a slave too, all the time she has looked out for me, protecting me from the world and being a friend and sister to me" I said back a little awkward laugh masking more sullen thoughts "I may never really repay her for anything she has done for me" she put her hand atop of mine "in her mind you have more than repaid her" Aria smiled back.
"You wear our colours, but like me you do not belong to anyone" she said pulling on the cuff of my trouser leg "I live by Myra's side but I do not belong to their tribe, I used to belong to Red's old tribe before they scattered to the wind, Myra took me under her wing and looked after me, it's why I look so strange" she said lifting her dress and bowing to me. I bowed in reply "I belong to the forest, the Queen adopted me after my world threw me away, it's why I am so small" I said gesturing how tiny I was. "two outsiders living on the inside?" she laughed back "Yeah I guess so" I laughed back, as we paused to enjoy each others company I felt an odd urge "Would you like to come visit me sometime? I have room if you wanted to stay too" she looked back to me in surprise "You would want to be a friend with me?" I nodded back smiling "I belong to this world now, it would be nice to have some new friends to go along with my new home! you could bring Myra too if she wanted to come?" she was smiling "you could be my first friend? of course I would love to visit you" we shared a moment in the moonlight together before we parted ways for now.
I collected up that dress and took it back to the camp with me, I left my shoes off, I wanted to feel the world under my feet, every bit of dirt or blade of grass between my toes, I wanted to feel alive I guess? It was a long walk back either way, but it was a nice night.
The strange thing was the walk back to the camp, even without shoes, suddenly it wasn't painful?
