I slept on that roof that night, the sun breaking the sky woke me.
As the morning sky filled my world with colour again, mother and Red appeared, I jumped down to greet them both, running up to mother and grabbing hold of her. She pulled me into her chest "you have seen it haven't you? sorry Evelyn, I couldn't stop her destroying your home" she said softly, I grasped her so tight and just cried into her chest, Red placing her hand on my shoulders.
As I looked up she was sad "there is nothing you could have done, it's me she wants" I said as I gave her the note the Sorceress had left behind for me. She read it "so it's true, she is after you" she passed the note to Red "we will protect you Evelyn" Red took the note folding it back up and offered it back to me.
Mother looked at me "well this is a new look Evelyn, look at your hair, it really does have it's own mind doesn't it" she chuckled stroking my cheek "I won't let her control me anymore" I said to her looking up at her, she smiled back "She never has Evelyn, that is why she is like this with people, people don't respect fear nor do they love it, she hasn't learned this yet, she can't control you with fear" mother was so often insightful. She looked over my clothes "your old world yes?" I nodded back "it suits you well, Maryc liked your shoes" she laughed holding onto me.
We sat on the grass by the house, as always wine was present, I told them about my bow training and my first successful hunt and proudly showed them my new little bow. Red looked at the bow "It's quite small? but it will work in the trees for you yes?" she said analysing the little bow, I took it and made my way up into the branches of a nearby tree, firing an arrow into the ground nearby, before jumping back down to retrieve my arrow. "My little sister is now a hunter!" Red chuckled pulling me back towards her "Now you really can be a Green Devil! she laughed, mother laughed with her too.
I sat with mother and she was toying with my hair, trying to un-weave the mess of curls, now was time to tell them both, I was scared to tell them but I needed to tell them. I looked up at mother with my hair in her hands "I need to talk to you both about something" she kept my hair in her hands "I know you do Evelyn" she said. "You have given me so much with no expectation or reward to yourselves. You have given me a family and a home without asking anything in return, you have trained me to look after myself and given me confidence and self belief, both gifts I had never had before" Red was looking over at me as mother was trying to make something from the mess of my hair.
I took a sip of wine and began again "Now I have to repay you all for what you have done for me, I have put you all in danger and I need to make things right so that your sons hunters aren't killed and tortured in the woods, your children aren't placed in harms way. You gave me an entire world to call my home, if it wasn't for the gifts you have all given me, I probably wouldn't be alive and now I have to repay you. I am going to go back to my hollow and face that Sorceress" Red called out "You can't, she will kill you if you get anywhere near her!" Red looked to the Queen for support, she sat calmly playing with my hair.
I looked at Red "she might kill me, but she needs to find me first, if I can lure her out into the darkness and the forest, we will be on even grounds, her magic against my arrows and this dagger" Red moved in staring me down "you can't be serious, Mother!" she looked at mother, she sat calmly still playing round with my hair "Evelyn please, don't throw your life away, I can't let my sister get killed for nothing!" Red was still looking to mother for support. I placed my hand on Reds "she won't kill me Red, she didn't fully destroy my home, she left one sole buttercup, which I replanted in my old tree, if she can't even destroy my home, she can't kill me" Red was waiting for mother to intervene but she sat calmly playing with my hair.
Mother pushed me forward slightly "there now, that looks like a princess again" she smiled after spending what seemed like hours working my hair a neat braid. She turned me round and looked into my eyes, thinking and analysing me, she turned to Red, thinking before she spoke "Red, she won't kill Evelyn, though Evelyn I really think you shouldn't go through with this" I looked into her eyes, I didn't know why but I knew what she was thinking? "However I can tell you need to do this and your motive for doing it is to save a family you have long wanted to have, you are willing to give your life for us?" she calmly awaited my reply "It is the only thing I can do to repay you for what you have provided me with" I said back to her. A soft smile came to her face "You must do what you feel is right Evelyn, I will not try to stop you and I know you wish to do this alone, I will make sure not even Red tries to follow or stop you, just promise me one thing my little Evelyn?" she softly looked me in the eyes again "Return to me after you have succeeded or failed, I'm not prepared to lose you again Evelyn" she took hold of me pulling me towards her and whispered in my ear "Return to me Evelyn" Red was dumbfounded by what she heard.
Red looked at me and mother and came over sighing "Just come back home Green Devil" she joined us in embrace, this might be the last time we ever saw one another, we made sure the moment lasted.
As they departed that day, I knew one thing, I wasn't going to die in the forests, she would have to be far better than she was destroying my home if she was going to beat me, though I still didn't know if I could really kill yet, only time would tell I suppose?

Excellent work on this story! I managed to find some spare time and got caught up with the story! Even though her mother knows Evelyn needs to do what's in her heart, I hope the outcome eases the worry of both her sister and me, for her safety! I think you have done an awesome job on the story and it's beautiful renders! I sometimes wish I had more than 24hrs in the day! Please don't slow your work flow down, I will eventually catch up! :-)
Thank you Johnny :)
Happy days, I can drop the next chapter ;) I tried to place a big emphasis on that aspect of it all, even though the Queen and Red have adopted Evelyn, they see her as their own, I suppose the long aim with the story is to show Evelyn gaining the things in life she missed out on when she was a child and growing up.
In truth it helps me too, as there is a lot to fit in and very intricate details are harder to write and render so that both work harmoniously :)
