This artwork is inspired by The Virgin Queen Elizabeth I of England. Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death on 24 March 1603.
The Virgin Queen did not wear makeup until a bout with smallpox in 1562 which left her with a lot of facial scars and deep welts. The makeup would prove to be very deadly. She painted her face with white lead and vinegar, which poisoned her slowly over time and ate away at her skin.
