Description
For this one, I turned to the great Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. It opens with the creation of the world, as the goddess Ilmatar ("She of the air") descends into the sea and becomes the water mother. The earth and heavens, sun and moon, sky and clouds are created from the shards of a goldeneye duck's egg. She also bears Väinämöinen, the first man and principal hero of the epic (but more of him later...).
She is also occasionally called Luonnotar ("She of nature"), as in Sebelius' tone poem telling the mythical creation story.
