Years ago, I read a comment purportedly from a WWI pilot to the effect that: if they had the advantage, they attacked; if they were out-numbered, they turned and ran. I'm sure it's apocryphal; after all, plenty of pilots in both wars attacked even when facing bad odds, but pouncing on the weak is to be expected in warfare, isn't it?

If you're fighting fair, then you're doing it wrong. You fight for victory, not fairness. If the situation were reversed, no doubt the ally plane would do the same thing.
