Description

Superman and the Flash have traveled through space and used a "Boom Tube" to open a wormhole to make their way to Apokolips, the home world of Darkseid and his minions. After Darkseid's last attempt and failure to acquire Earth as another colony world a truce was established.

The Guardian Alliance along with the so called Gods of New Genesis, lead by the High Father and Darkseid's estranged son Orion, descended upon Apokolips and eventually cornered Darkseid. Rather than kill his father Orion beseached Highfather to grant peace and confine Darkseid and all his minions to Apokolips. Any that were caught trying to leave Apokolips would be executed.

Darkseid would not surrender, but accepted this as a truce. Though no one expects Darkseid to be silent forever, this truce has brought about a certain peace among the United Galaxies and has enabled formerly oppressed worlds to break free of Darkseid's rule and flourish and grow.
All that said, Darkseid is ancient and all knowing. His very nature of curiosity and a desire for the anti-life equation have made him a great repository of universal history and it is for this reason the two fastest and, arguably strongest, members of the Guardian Alliance visit Darkseid now.

Currently due to distance, Kal and Wally are unaware of the abduction of Diana, Wonder Woman, by her uncle, Hades. Prior to the fruition of Dr. Cyber's plans to capture Diana and disrupt the Amazons of Themyscira, some of the Guardian Alliance, led by J'onn J'onzz, had an encounter with two very strange alien entities on Antarctica. J'onn, Superman, Flash and two other friends of the Alliance were able to save the base at McMurdo Bay and destroy the alien entities. But the release of these aliens and the prehistoric ruins discovered that they had been trapped in, opened up many questions.

J'onn had to reveal a time in the past when there were no super heroes. Just him and Wonder Woman working in secret along with some Amazons. At the time of this Antarctic encounter, Wonder Woman was searching for the stolen Bracers of Hephaestus and a missing Amazon which eventually led to Diana's capture. But J'onn revealed to Kal and Wally how he, J'onn, and Diana, back in the early 1920s had come to Antarctica to assist a scientist and his research on some ancient ruins found on the continent.

As it turns out the prehistoric ruins dated back a few million years and were built by an alien race. These aliens had created shapeshifting servants to assist in building and with everyday life. Over time the servants, Shogoths, grew more intelligent and began to resent their creators, seeing themselves as slaves. Eventually they rebelled, but their masters were able to destroy most of them and seal the city off to keep the last few from escaping.
Unfortunately the discovery of the ruins allowed some Shogoth to escape. J'onn, Diana and a military team were able to destroy two that had escaped and seal the last two behind a wall with a special seal the Shogoths could not approach and certainly not cross. However this was at the expense of leaving the lead scientist behind. He volunteered to stay behind to put the seal in place because he released them in the first place.
Now one hundred years later the seal was broken and as noted earlier members of the Guardian Alliance were able to stop and destroy the last two Shogoths that had found a way to break the seal holding them captive.

But that was not all. Most history books leave out the Incident of the Dark Pharaoh. In the mid 30s, prior to WWII and during the rise of Hitler a phenomenon spread across the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe spreading as far as western Russia and the Himalayan Plateau.
A strange, charismatic and powerful man arose out of Egypt claiming to be a Pharaoh of ages past and was to bring order and peace to the modern world. But everywhere he went chaos unfolded. From 1934 to 1938 this chaos creeped across the land creating unrest and disrupting lives wherever it went. J'onn, Diana and their small squad of Amazons could not leave this unchecked anymore. As it was, this entity's speeches went unnoticed accept for the locals and it was nearly too late by the time J'onn and Diana knew this Dark Pharaoh was up to no good.

In the end they confronted him and he revealed he had many supernatural powers after all. He claimed to be a messenger of the Outer Gods and it was time to ready Earth for their imminent arrival. One of the great Old Ones lies in a deep sleep in the oceans of Earth and it was time for the Outer Gods to claim the many Earths and this whole universe from the Old Ones and their slumbering leader.

At that time this information was new to Diana and J'onn. Neither had ever heard of the Outer Gods or the Old Ones, in fact at that time, the New Gods of Apokolips and New Genesis were unknown to them. Eventually the Dark Pharaoh was defeated. But it was not easy. The being seemed to exist simultaneously on multiple dimensions, so they were able to find and get aid from a great magician, Zatarra's grandmother, and they were able to strip the Dark Pharaoh of his multidimensional selves leaving him with a single, weak physical body. The being escaped into a bizarre space ship that looked like a squid and left Earth. Since then, J'onn has searched space for the ship and as time moved on and the Lantern Corp came to Earth, J'onn enlisted Hal to help him search local space, but it seems the Dark Pharaoh left.

The recent escape of the last two Shogoths tell another story however. The aliens that created them seemed to know about the Old Ones and the Outer Gods, though their language is only now starting to be understood. J'onn fears that it was no coincidence that the Shogoths escaped and the woman that helped stop the Dark Pharaoh had suddenly and seemingly come back from the dead. Zatanna's grandmother came to J'onn prior to this last mission to the Antarctic. On the verge of total insanity, she came to J'onn and in near incoherence cried that the Pharaoh will return, the Old One will rise to face the Outer Gods and their battlefield will be Earth. Should this happen, nothing living on Earth now will survive. She then aged for what seemed one hundred years before J'onn's eyes and crumbled to dust on the ground.

J'onn passed all this information on to the others with him as well as to Hawk Girl, Shiara and John the other Green Lantern. It was decided that more information was needed on these Outer Gods and the Old Ones, so Kal and Wally volunteered to go to Apokolips and see what Darkseid might know. After all, the so called New Gods should know something about the Outer Gods and hopefully the Old Ones. Given Darkseid's vast knowledge they thought he was better supplied than the Highfather, to which, they are correct.

Meanwhile, Shiara, being from a far off world from Earth has many contacts in this galaxy and a few in neighboring galaxies as well. Her, along with a Lantern, will tap the knowledge of Oa as well as any planetary systems of ancient origins who might know of these so called gods.
And so, we see Superman and the Flash standing before their arch enemy looking for information. Oh how desperate times make for strange alliances.
