I'll start with the vase again---again, you covered it with your main flower (the Stock) clinging to the vase, and growing out of it. I love how you do that. And the rest of the vase has whispers of petal-veins and leaf-veins---love that too. And all kinds of different greens (they get luminous on the bottom!), and a few free floating flowers, as if they grew right there in the middle of the abyss. The flowers are these little ripple-islands packed into the upper half of the vase, like fungal, moss, and other primal growths. And they adorn the opening like a rough-edged (and very expensive) neck scarf.

Then...the shoots: These are asparagus (!), I mean they have those yellows in them, and the rough greens. They look edible by themselves, and they have a life of their own (they're not just the prelude to the 'stars' of the piece ((ie, the flowers)) ). Then the main bouquet: They're tightly packed (you could say they have 'bonds'---that's just my cheap way of making the sad joke, "stocks and bonds") (sorry), and man you dive into that crammed feeling, curving your brush around and back and forth, getting all those convolutions and intertwined and colliding energies. You don't smooth them over: From an overview, this is one frizzy head of flowers; it's got a life of its own. I see you've got the darker pinks coagulated on the bottom, with the lighters on top (there are dark stocks up there too, but the top is mainly lighter): You've made a natural progression from dark (root) to light (sky), and, to me, it's intuitive and perfect. The curls and furls are painted with all kinds of little detours and side streets (as small flowers tend to create); and the buds triumphantly burst out of the crowd, and assert themselves on top: They're a beautiful mix of whites with greens of all shades. The bouquet is a beautiful flowering, arising out of the vase. Almost like an explosion.

And then the background... Again, the atmosphere resonates like echoes, it picks up the rhythms of the flowers and shouts and whispers them all across the painting---sometimes with real flower forms, and sometimes (at the top) with flames and vapors and steam. (Those top pillars of steam look reminiscent of your amazing alcohol-ink paintings.) It's like the whole painting dissolves into huge sheets of steam whooshing heavenward. And some of the imagery on each side is like the ornamental wallpapers of the great decorative artists of the 19th c.

Finally, the bottom has 'root' colors, darker greens and darker shadows: Only, here, you also have luminous greens: You paint these greens, every so often, that look like textured glass with big bright lights inside. So there is peace and illumination at the root of the painting (as there often is in your work). To sum up the painting glibly, "Not too freakin' shabby!" Less glib, it's another gorgeous, effulgent, blooming and bursting flower painting from you, pulsing with 'flower rhythms' over and over, and beaming with deep hues, light, rhythms, etc. And an unforced, natural mix of rigorous technique---however conscious or unconscious---with voluminous rushing powers. Masterful, Carol---which, with your work, is the norm. For however long you're here, welcome back...

Mark, thanks to you and everyone for their wonderful comments. I do love creating the vases for this collection, as they fascinate me as much as the flowers do. There is a part of me that wants every one of them to be real and sitting in my home. I played around with ceramics once upon a time and did create a few unique vases, but I always wanted to make them more elaborate, and they never quite lived up to what I imagined or could actually do. With art, I can make them as fancy as I want, with none of the mess. No clay goes spinning into oblivion off the wheel. Though sometimes they give me fits trying to create what I imagine. I got a big smile from your description of the stock bouquet as a ‘frizzy head of flowers’. I’ve always been a big hair person. Since it’s no longer popular or stylish to have big hair, I give my flowers big frizzy hair. :o) So far none of them have complained. Through the years I can’t count how many big bouquets of flowers, both real and silk flowers, I have arranged. Every home I have lived in and decorated has been a freakin’ garden inside, one way or another. Flowers, plants, greenery, everywhere … to use your phrase ‘ pulsing with flower rhythms’. Even the novels I wrote are filled with nature and flowers. Not surprising that I would translate this obsession to paintings as well. As a child I spent endless hours playing in my mother’s gardens, fantasizing and escaping into another world. And as an adult, when things get challenging and I want to just feel good, I still escape into the world of flowers through my art, getting lost inside the color and textures and shapes and beauty. It’s a pretty nice place to be and I’m so glad you enjoy going there with me.
