Description

Scampton Airbase has been up and running since 1916. Its been a bomber base all its life. It is of course most famous for 617, 'The Dambusters' squadron who were based here and flew the raid from here. The film was also filmed here. They were not the only Lancaster squadron on site. Later it was a major V Bomber base and now its home to the Red Arrows. But its The Lancaster that its most famous for, the hanger you see the BBMF flying behind was built before the war, in all likelihood 617 Lanc's stood inside. It should also be noted, the biggest queue on the feild was to get a photo of a small grave. It was for 'Nigger' Guy Gibsons Black Labrador who was run over by a car the night he set off on the Dam's Raid. (I DO NOT apologize for the name). Photo will follow and I will not censor! Rob

I'm jealous! Who wouldn't want to see and hear a Lanc fly-by! As for Gibson's famous dog and success code word, Well it was a different time and place. Can't change history.

Oh, my! Thanks for the history! I recall reading a book about the Lancasters, but now I get to see a corner of one of the buildings mentioned in the book. And, yes, there was a mention of Gibson's black labrador. Poor dog, and poor Gibson. And NO need to apologize - it's part of a name. (To hell with PC!). Keep up the good work! Oh, and is that a water bug i see? NO! It's a real, flying Lanc! :-)

I share your empathy as I remember being prompted by "Gaudi" as I looked at some new overpass construction. I don't think just showing my photo of a New Orleans streetcar and noting it was no "Desire." would help anyone appreciate the irony of the story you have cited. Add Pierre Curie and Frida Kahlo, it still does not register. Barrel bombs from helicopters? Maybe --

Cool photo. I thought 617 was based in Woodhall Spa? Or are they One & the same?

Hi, No you are correct. 617 did move to Woodhall Spa, and fly raids using Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs from their. But, The Dams Raid (and others) was flown from Scampton. Rob
