Description

I need to do some research before I continue my sand sculpture series, I have found out that there are different types of sand for sand sculpturing. The 4th place sculpture will be posted next. While in Lincoln, New Hampshire a few weeks ago, we found a 1974 Reliant Robin parked outside a souvenir shop. This is a 3 wheel, 4 cylinder, 700cc engine, 45 horsepower, 4 speed car that gets 60 miles per gallon. It was made in England and had a fiberglass body. It was never imported into the U.S. because of safety regulations. The owner said it is surprisingly stable because of the low center of gravity and it was not for sale. The yellow car, behind this one, is a 1947 Crosley which is also not for sale. Crosleys could be purchased at Macys Department stores, throughout the U.S., from 1939 to 1952. This photo will zoom. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

a local antique store has one of the 3 wheeled cars like this with a Viper V10 on the fender. I really like the Crosley and also the 57 or 58 Ford on the other side

We had an unstable person in our town years ago who set fire to these whenever he had the opportunity. I can't remember the details, but it was the mid sixties.

Interesting old cars. Too bad the US did not find a way to get a high mpg auto . We have been so far behind in that field.

A Dell Boy car, I nearly bought one of these when I was in my teens as you could drive them on a motorcycle licence, If I remember rightly It had no reverse so you had to park it so you could drive out or push It out, In the end I bought a motorcycle.

If you've not seen a robin reliant in action before go onto youtube and search for robin reliant top gear bbc - there is even a space shuttle version!

Wow ! This is a long way from home. I like the cute style of the Robin and the Regal ( Del Boy) that came before it. The later Rialto just looked ugly to me. So glad you called it a Reliant Robin and not a Robin Reliant like some people do lol.

A real eye catcher Dana. Always has seemed funny to me that at one time department stores were in the car business.

LOL, Dana. When I read the title I was expecting to see a bird! I have never seen one of these little cars. Rather odd looking with only three wheels. But 60 MPG, that's great! And I never knew you could purchase a car through Macy's!! A new fact I learned today! Great shot!

I have seen the odd one or two of these through the years, but very rarely indeed, and your explanations are probably why. Very cool looking autos both, and excellent shot!

A shot superb. I always have to laugh when I see these cars with three wheels. In the 50s there were in Germany pick-up trucks with 3 wheels, they were named "Goliath GD 750". I was always wondering how they can make a turn without falling over. Must have something to do with the low center of gravity.

Great shot of these unusual cars, Dana. That Reliant looks like it would be tricky to drive with one wheel in front, but I guess it's not any worse than the 'Trikes" I see a lot of bikers driving. I remember reading about Macy's selling cars way back when.

What a great pair of finds. I thought the yellow car was a 1940 Ford. Three wheel cars seem to have been a specialty of the Europeans. The British also made a three wheeled Morgan. And, of course, there was the Messerschmitt KR200. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_KR200
