Description
OK, I didn't take the photo today, but this is probably happening as you read this. Climbing on military vehicles isn't a bad way for kids to celebrate Independence Day and get some exercise. You may have noticed in my photos of the First Division Museum at Cantigny that kids and adults who are bit more spry than yours truly are having great fun climbing on the tanks. Well, there are signs in the tank park that say it is just fine to climb on and take command.
The photo shows a group of likely lads who decided to have a race over the M47 Patton. My money was on the kid in the red hoody going over the gun barrel.

It would be a pretty flimsy tank that couldn't take a bunch of kids climbing all over it (with the exception of antennae, of course).

Great scene, looks like they are having fun, I know I would have if I were a few years younger!

Can you climb inside, too? I recall sitting at the controls of a Soviet T64 on July 4th, 1978. That was awe-inspiring! I don't have a driver's license but whenever someone teases me about it I reply, "Have YOU driven a T64?" Their faces go blank, then I tell them, 45 tons of Soviet heavy metal. That shuts them up fast! But the M60 on display there was "No Entry". We could look through a hatch, but that was it. LOADS of switches, dials and guages. So, I'm quite curious how these tanks look inside. Do you have any photos of their insides? Keep up the good work! :-)

Yeah, use the front bogie (did I spell that right?) to step up and your on it no worries.. While this is excellent for kids to use as an educational tool, its bloody annoying for people to get a photo.. Britain has a nil education policy in force and lets annoy everybody everywhere when we can thing it seems.. My last visit to the IWM London was a bloody nightmare! But, this is good to see none the less. Rob
