Description

Malaya. A few days before Christmas 1941... Recreating the last moments before a fatal collision in combat between a pilot of 453 Squadron RAAF flying a Brewster Buffalo (with two and a half A6M2s already in the bag from 9 days earlier) and a Nakajima Ki43 "Hayabusa" from the 64th Sentai IJAAF. Collision or deliberate ramming? Even on a bad day, the anorexic Ki43 could run rings around the portly Buffalo- but in the chaos of a dogfight a little bit extra pull on the flaps at the wrong moment could lead to a disaster like this... The prototypes of the Ki43 were initially so disappointing in the "floats like a butterfly" specification that the factory was forced to save the contract by reducing the airframe weight, (with an angle-griner perhaps?). A series of last minute tweaks were applied, including "butterfly" flaps to provide extra lift during combat aerobatics. But the desperate redesign created a flaw in the wing that made it apt to snap off in the high-G environment of combat. Ooops. That and other shortcomings were partially addressed in the Ki43-II which entered service in late 1942. Rendered in Vue 8 Esprit Assets Its my Buffalo. The Ki43 is the Poserworks Nakajima "Zero" (CP) fixed up (I made a new UV map to allow an assymetrical texture, in this case the 64th Sentai. In Poser I "hid" the existing misplaced antenna mast, parented obj's for new antenna, machine guns, telescopic sight, and the cowling scoop ). Hey presto... an "Oscar." Thanks for viewing and comments.

Indeed, an excellent render...I didn't know the IJA had the Hayabusa that early in the conflict.
