Description

At the end of August, Marie and I decided to dig a pond in our garden. Just two hours after the water was in the pond, the first dragonfly appeared ! And the next days, while we were busy planting flowers and plants in and around the water, the same dragonfly was flying very fast in circles, chasing away any intruder in his new territory… Yesterday, his behavior was somewhat different : the dragonfly was now sitting on branches or stones along the water and I was able to take some pictures ! I’m proud and happy that this beautiful insect is the first inhabitant of our newly created pond ! Could someone confirm that this is well a female Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) ? Thank you very much for your comments on my previous upload : thumb_1532215.jpg "first dragonfly around our pond !"

A superb macro, dear Michel. I see the smile :-) You must have done everything right with the pond and planting to attract the dragonflies so soon. Excellent work on pond and shot!! Hugs and kisses. DiDi.

Hi Michel, If you want to turn your new pond into a Monolake system (see my yesterday posting) this is the receipe: Quote You can make a close approximation of Mono Lake water at home or in the classroom: begin with one gallon of pure water, add 18 tablespoons of baking soda, ten tablespoons of table salt, 8 teaspoons of Epsom salt, and a pinch of borax or laundry detergent (in order to make tufa, just add fresh water containing dissolved calcium chloride). If you wanted to concoct a more accurate approximation of Mono Lake water, you might consider adding trace amounts of strontium, magnesium, calcium, fluoride, arsenic, lithium, iodine, and tungsten. If you really wanted to get picky, you might also throw in an abnormally high amount of the radioisotope carbon-14, a smidgen of uranium, thorium, and plutonium! Beginning to sound dangerous? It’s not--because of extremely low concentrations. Un quote One a chemist, always a chemist !!! But indeed your excellent capturred libelle has a smile on his face!! Succes with your pond!! Have a nice evening Henk
