Subject: Converting a Daz Scene to Poser

generation2235 ( ) posted Fri, 11 January 2019 at 6:39 PM · edited Tue, 16 April 2024 at 10:38 AM

Is there someone here who has the expertise to convert a Daz scene to Poser, morph dials and all? Seems to me a service like this could be considered hot commodity by alot of artists who prefer Poser and are already quite familiar with the Poser Software and its features. Hot enough commodity that I'd even be willing to pay someone for such a helpful service of converting a Daz scene for me.

Incidentally I did already try exporting a Daz scene to Cr2 from within Daz but no luck.

I also before starting this thread I ran a search on these forums but no results on this particular topic came up in my search for 'Convert Daz Scene to Poser.'

Can anyone help?

Thanks

try this but it doesn't work for a lot of more modern daz scenes with iray. DSON importer

The DAZ DSON importer may work, but you will need to add your DAZ Studio Content Libraries to Poser as external runtimes. As Esther notes, materials will need to be converted, and any scene with Genesis 3 or higher figures will not work properly, although those figures and clothing can be brought in separately using Willdial's free Genesis 3 updater...

Well I installed the DSON importer and it appears as it should under the Scripts menu in Poser.

Then I followed a video tutorial on how to create a Poser scene from within Daz Studio. The procedure did produce the Cr2, png and and Py files, of which I then copied into a new folder in my Poser Runtime/Character folder. Then I could find the scene I just converted in my Poser Figures library but when I brought the scene onto Poser stage nothing appeared. What is the next step?

Just to clarify, the scene I'm converting is just that, it's a scene with a house, a yard, a ground plane and plants & trees.

WandW ( ) posted Sun, 13 January 2019 at 8:32 PM

You need some geometry files (.obj)to have then load in Poser

With the DSON importer, you should be able to open the Studio scene directly if the DAZ Content library has been added to your Poser Library. I should have mentioned in my post above that you need the free DSON Loader Script to load Studio files, such as saved scenes, that lack Poser Companion Files. Grab it here..

An addendum to my post above; I just tried it several times, and something seems to have changed, as I don't seem to be able to open saved recent Studio scenes with the DSON loader any longer; both Poser 11 and 2014 hang... 😾

However, I was able to open a scene from 2016...

Gave that a try this morning and it did not work for me either.

I think at this point I'd be willing to pay someone for a service of converting Daz scenes for use and full functionality in Poser and there's no doubt in my mind alot of Poser artists would greatly appreciate such a service so as to accomplish this. If the price for the service was fair it would be an attractive and very helpful service.

Is there anyone here who can offer such a service?

If you have the DSON thing already installed, try this - it will import all sorts of D|S stuff into Poser, not always perfectly, but well enough most of the time.

Here is a scene with a Genesis 2 figure I saved as a .DUF from Studio 4.10 and brought into Poser as above. Rendered in P11.1 Pro Superfly.

The room materials are for iRay, the figure and chair mats are for 3Delight. While it looks pretty good overall, the chair should be metallic, the picture in the frame at left is not visible (I suspect it may be a transparency issue, as the jar above it is grey) and I've no idea why the wall plate at right is blue..

However, there is no way to guarantee that a Genesis asset will perform 100% correctly in Poser. As an example, note the poke-through in the left forearm, which occurs because Poser does not support the DAZ smoothing modifier...

Thanks.

WandW ( ) posted Wed, 16 January 2019 at 8:10 AM · edited Wed, 16 January 2019 at 8:13 AM

It is pretty straightforward; make sure that any DAZ content library folders have been added to the Poser library as external runtime directories.

I saved the scene from Studio as a regular DAZ .DUF, and then used the D3D DSON Loader to browse to that location and open it.

I then go and get a cup of tea and do something else for a while, as it takes several minutes to import the scene.

One possible caveat is that I don't use the latest version of the DSON importer as it causes distortions in Genesis 2 figures; I use the last beta version, which may be in your DAZ Product Library; it is still in mine. Also, posing in Poser is very sluggish, at least on my 6-core AMD machine...

I totally don't know what I'm doing in Daz. I wanted to offer a screenshot of the scene view so I could show you an example of what I'm working with but I obviously messed something up in Daz to where I now can't even get a preview of the scene once it is loaded into the Daz stage so that I could take a screenshot of what I'm working with. Fairly familiar with Poser but Daz appears so different and alien to me and obviously indicates quite a few limitations as opposed to what I can do in Poser.

The other thing is that I'm limited on time since I have a heavy work schedule so, given the days and weeks gone by (and extra money spent) that I have been chasing this around and not really having time to properly pore over this conversion task I think it's gonna be better that I have someone who really and truly knows what they're doing in Daz that they could get the conversion job done for a reasonable price.

I've already messed things in my Daz app to the point that I think I'm probably looking at a full uninstall and reinstall of Daz to restore things because I've undoubtedly done something wrong enough to warrant that.

The steps that I've attempted to follow in this dialogue haven't produced the results expected and part of the problem is I am unfamiliar with Daz and the other problem is I am pressed for time so some assistance with this would come in handy. Once I get this scene into Poser stage with all the moving parts working I'm good to go.

generation2235 ( ) posted Fri, 18 January 2019 at 6:18 PM

OK so as to help illustrate what I actually have to accomplish and to clarify, I'm in need of converting this scene, which was originally made for Daz only, to use in Poser 11. This screenshot (which Daz barely allowed me to get before it crashed and burned) shows what I'm working with. It is a scene. A preloaded scene. It is of a building and property. I did my best to get the entirety of the scene to within the screenshot so you can see pretty much all of what's there, at least the exterior. Obviously this scene model has alot of moving parts like windows and doors.

WandW, I may be wrong but what I've gathered from your post about the app you suggested I try and I bought it and installed it, it seemed like you were describing the process of exporting or converting Poser scene or figures for use in Daz, which is the opposite direction I need to go with this. What you were describing was a bit confusing and when I gave it a try for importing Daz files into Poser I didn't get any results.

Honestly I'd just stay in Daz with this scene but Daz seems so much more difficult since I'm so unfamiliar with it but very familiar with Poser, plus with Poser any editing done in a project is non-destructive and you can undo or go back, whereas in Daz, if a mistake is made in editing within a project there is no going back or undo feature, well at least I looked everywhere for it and it may be buried pretty good within all the buttons of the Daz interface.

So converting this scene for use in Poser is the option and if I can get that to work there is a good likelyhood that I will be buying alot more Daz-related content to enhance and continue to build my library. But first I need to get this one converted and to understand how so I can move forward.DAZ-1.jpg

generation2235 ( ) posted Sun, 20 January 2019 at 8:41 AM

Spending some time in Daz, familiarizing myself with some of the controls whilst working with this preload scene and I managed to come away with some rather nice renders of this scene, of which I will share with you so as to help you get a better idea of what I'm working with.

I've created the Cr2 file which does show up in my Poser Figures library, but since there are alot of props, some of them rigged to move within the figure such as doors and windows, I would need to convert the .dsf files in Daz into the file format Poser requires for props and it seems I should be able to accomplish this using the DSON plugin within Poser but how? Even if it involves importing each of the separate props and UV sets one by one (and there are some 347 folders respective to each piece of the house and property) in order to get this scene staged within Poser that's what I'm willing to take the time to do but if there is an alternative way of getting the job done in not as many steps I am certainly open to those suggestions too. 108_Ocean_Ave-Exterior1.png108_Ocean_Ave-Exterior2.png

WandW ( ) posted Sun, 20 January 2019 at 12:20 PM

OK, you are trying to bring in architectural models.

I loaded the Old Industrial Office Room from DAZ with iRay materials into DAZ Studio, and saved it as a scene. I then loaded it into Poser using the D3D DSON Loader script, and it loaded in seconds. The only issues are that in preview some walls are not visible in Preview (uncheck Remove Backfacing Polys in the preview render settings to fix), and the glass is not transparent...

DS Old Industrial Office.jpg

I'm don't know why you are having issues with DAZ Studio crashing, as it is pretty stable on my machine...

Heh-heh I think the issue with Daz crashing was me initially because I wasn't at first familiar with Daz and was initially uncomfortable with Daz.

Okay, so I have saved the scene in Daz. But at this point I might need pictorial of how to go about finding and then properly using the DSON script within Poser once I open my Poser. If you could offer some screen captures that would be so helpful.

Thanks much.

generation2235 ( ) posted Thu, 31 January 2019 at 7:03 PM

I hope the moderators don't mind my bumping this thread because alot of time has passed and I am still in search of some tutorial on this conversion process.

I've been spending a little more time in Daz, just getting a look around and doing some simple things such as camera settings and simple renders.

I'm at the point now where I would just need to know to convert the existing Daz-related files of this model to Poser language, how to target the Daz files to my Poser Runtime directories and how to use the DSON plugin to import all the elements that make up this architectural scene and get it staged into my Poser.

Thanks

It's quite simple really, it's called business, DAZ have a captive audience, the only figures/content they care about us using is their own.

They don't have any problems with us using their products in other software, as they have made it relatively simple to do just that. The problem is going the other way, the PZ3 Importer plugin can't see P7+ rigging, some DAE I have and so far every FBX I have explode if there are any bones in the files.

Basically if you want to use 3rd party figures in DS you need to start with the mesh, and rebuild it from the ground up using the tools built into DS, and for about 90% of the user base a total nightmare.

Well - the DSON importer was developed by DAZ to use DAZ Genesis figures in Poser. So it would have been up to SmithMicro to develop something to use Poser figures in DazStudio. At least that sounds fair to me.

Ok, was the 1st time I tried getting something DAZ into Poser 11Pro, with the DSONLoader. It was a hair fig. and it carried over ok, I think, beside all the morphs. They didn't come through. I there something special you need to do, to get them over to Poser?

Depending on how DAZ packaged its DSON content and when you might or might not be able to import the content into Poser. When dealing with the DSON installer, you must have a DSON Companion file and a Poser Companion file that go into their respective software. This means that the DSON Companion file goes into DAZStudio and the PCF goes into Poser. Your DAZ Library must be linked to Poser also, otherwise, there will be complications in importing a visible figure or a figure that is fully poseable. It is important that you have a DAZ file and a Poser file, either provided by DAZ or created by yourself. If a PCF does not exist you must create it yourself. There are tutorials on YouTube and other sites that explains the process. DSON Importer will work well with Genesis and Genesis 2, for it to work with Genesis 3 or Genesis 8 you need the Genesis 3 Poser updater. That app will prep the figures for further use in Poser and it has its own set of instructions.

DSONLoader works but it is not very reliable. Much older content will not need DSON because they were already created for Poser to begin with or exist as a set of files for both DAZStudio and Poser. Check the webpages before attempting to install content without frustration.

RobZhena ( ) posted Thu, 08 April 2021 at 7:04 PM

Rendo sadly has disappeared Netherwork's Creators Toybox, I would guess because it is incompatible with Poser 12 and is said to be under conversion to Python 3. This sucks if you want to covert DSON products to Poser with all the morphs, etc. If you have that program, the manual explains in simple-to-follow language how to export a cr2 (e.g figure, hair, clothing) from DAZ Studio for anything up to Genesis 2 and convert it to Poser native. I would have left the Poser 11 in the market place for the legions of users who don't want to move to Poser 12.

This is what I use to bring DS stuff in Poser or any other program that can import an OBJ, best part... you don't even need to install DS. I use it for hair mostly and sometimes sci-fi props... I bought one Daz hair once that looked like a mophead spread out on the floor after conversion, it's supposed to rest on top of the character's head... then!! it looks like hair, kinda lol

That's a fine tool to use, however, does it retain morphs, and can it create conforming content practical for the layperson to use without frustration? There are new users rushing to import Genesis figures into Poser before understanding what's involved in the process. Additional apps are great to ease the process but that's taking it to an intermediate level.

TwiztidKidd ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2021 at 11:24 AM

Nope... it creates a geometry file and the morph target files separately, so you have to load them one by one yourself... also you have to figure out the material setup yourself. It's 10 years old software but great for props.
