Subject: How to convert library thumbnails from .rsr to .png?

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Sun, 26 July 2015 at 7:42 AM ยท edited Fri, 29 March 2024 at 5:03 AM

When Poser changed from using .rsr library thumbnails to using .png library thumbnails, Poser converted these thumbnails from .rsr to .png automatically in any library that I looked at in Poser. Now, this seems to have stopped happening.

I have looked though my old library of models etc that I have made, and it seems that in many of the .zip forms of my older models etc, the thumbnails are still in .rsr format, which is no use to another user using my models if his Poser has stopped auto-converting from .rsr to .png.. How can I convert these .rsr images to .png mode on my computer, without having to load every model etc involved to stage and re-save it?

Can P3dO Explorer help me here?

I have been using Poser from Poser 3 on.

Yes, it can. Just open the folder in the explorer and run the converter tool.

If you use Windows, Dizzi's RSR Converter works well.ย  It works recursively, so I run it onย  the folder containing my external runtimes after installing older content.....

I recall that there is a comparable utility for OS X out there, too...

Yeah, RSRconv for mac. Haven't had to use my copy in a while, looks like the developer pulled it from the site. Probably could still rummage up a copy somewhere though. Elegant little utility.

I use Dimension 3D's RuntimeZIP & Repair to not only convert the RSR but to delete them completely after conversion.

Thanks: I did the job using a facility in P3dO Explorer.

When use of .png instead of .rsr as Poser library icons was new, Poser automatically converted any .rsr to .png in any library folder that it looked in; that was useful. But this does not happen now; I have an old character called Millennium Horse SR1, with files Millennium Horse SR1.cp2, Millennium Horse SR1.png, Millennium Horse SR1.rsr. I renamed Millennium Horse SR1.png to Millennium Horse SR1xxx.png, and then looked at that library entry using my Poser 10, and it displayed as the "No Preview" "shruggy man" image. I then renamed Millennium Horse SR1xxx.png back to Millennium Horse SR1.png , and refreshed the library display in Poser, and the icon for Millennium Horse SR1 went back to a brown horse's head and neck, as it should be.

Please tell Poser's current maintainers to restore the ability to automatically convert .rsr into .png , as likely there are many old websites of Poser characters (including old long-standing Renderosity members' old freeware and marketplace ware) which still have .rsr and not .png as the library entry's icon display.

The auto converting feature died at Poser 7. ย Re-instituting rsr format is a bad idea. ย Older content is becoming very obscelete; shaders are not correctly set up and they render horribly. ย With more viable current content to select from, those older files will eventually disappear.

@EldritchCellar: Seems RSRconv for mac is no longer available. Do you have a copy and would you mind to share it?

gerberc ( ) posted Tue, 29 March 2016 at 3:51 PM

just found it on anther site - thanks anyway.

Glad you found it. Yes I still have it, although I haven't used it in over 5 years about...

I have a bunch of old content archived on disc (mostly sixus1 stuff) that might need it if I ever decide to dust off those things.

learned through the grapevine (Thanks Richard ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ), rsr is a mac .pict file.

haven't tested it yet,though.

by test i mean rename rsr to .pict and use pse to batch convert pict to png

Ok, doing the "think" song from Jeopardy ... I have over 150 gigs to work with, poor little program! I've been putting this off for years. (I've had Poser since 3, and did it once with P3dO Explorer but it didn't catch them all. Ah done. Good topic, good help!

like it would also be sweet if newer versions of Poser allowed .Pict file formats for textures and .bum file formats for bump maps. I have a load of textures and bumps from older Poser versions I use all the time and it frustrates the hell out of me recalling a character created in say Poser 7 using textures in .pict and .bum formats only to be tld there is a texture that can't loa. It is a pain the heinie looking through all th textures on a character or scene to find the offending one and then i have to load it in photoshop and reformat it to work in a newer version of Poser.

shante ( ) posted Wed, 06 April 2016 at 1:56 PM

we can always save the file to the library and it will create a new thumb more appropriate to the Poser version you use but who the frell wants to keep dong that/ Right?

A_Sunbeam ( ) posted Tue, 12 September 2017 at 3:12 AM

I still have the mac version of the rsr converter if anyone needs it.

shante ( ) posted Tue, 12 September 2017 at 11:06 AM

Sounds cool. How do I get that and for what version of Mac OS is it compatible with?

A_Sunbeam ( ) posted Tue, 12 September 2017 at 12:08 PM

Go to http://www.fergusoncreations.co.uk/pickup/RSRconv.dmg and download the dmg. I've put it there for other Mac users because it's no longer available on the web. It works with any Intel Mac; I'm running OS Sierra, but it works with Snow Leopard and later. If you're using a non-Intel Mac then I think I still have the converter that works with Tiger.

I'm getting back into Poser a decade after my custom PC, its sprawling P4 Runtime and back-ups died in a storm. New CAD Tower (*) runs P11Pro. I've been using the 'RSR -> PNG' converter to identify / thumbnail 'classic' stuff I've salvaged from a slide-mount archive drive. Almost as a joke, I pointed P11's library at the P3 Runtime; it worked ! Solara lives !! { "Huh ? How did I get here ??" }

I, too, found P11 doesn't like RSRs. P11 also doesn't like .PICTs; I'm re-learning how to hunt misplaced files and tweak CR2 / PP2 internals rather sooner than I'd hoped...

So I guess we are really screwed on the rsr to png conversion on Mac Catalina as it no longer accepts 32 bit applications

HartyBart ( ) posted Mon, 18 November 2019 at 8:22 PM

I'd heard that Macs can run Windows inside them, via virtualisation software such as Virtualbox? Or have Apple completely borked that option as well?

Also, Shaderworks' "Library Manager" (both the first and version 2) automatically convert .rsr -> .png upon encountering them. Just a hint for those that might have that (not available anymore, I believe).

Macs have several ways to run Windows on them. Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, or VirtualBox. Boot Camp, although I never tried it, will allow you to dual boot with Mac OS and Windows, but not at the same time. The others are virtual software and limited in what you can run.

How do I still have .rsr files? I have RSRConv for Mac, but of course it's 32 bit. I have to wonder how hard it is to recompile such a simple program as a 64 bit... LOL
