Novembers Artist of the Month - picky

First of all I want to thank each one of you who has found the time to get involved and vote, regardless of who you voted for. Also I would like to thank all the people that have given me words of compliment, support, help and friendship! WHO IS PICKY? Picky is Drazenka Kimpel, a woman with a very difficult name to pronounce. I grew up in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia where I lived my first 20 years. About that time my life changed drastically. I got the chance to sit on the plane for the very first time and fly over to the USA to start working in the very booming (at the time,) cruise industry. Since then, I managed to stay on for almost 10 years. I traveled all over the world performing in a large Illusion show. I was able to meet different people, work on my "sea-legs" and most importantly, get the experience of a lifetime. I was fortunate enough to meet the most important person in my life, my husband. He is my biggest inspiration, influence, supporter, friend and everything that a woman can ask for. Right now we are working for our own software company (Magicgate Software), as a designing force. I have no children yet, but someday will put that on the schedule. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RENDERING? Learning the computer side of things began in '98, with an old 200 mhz laptop, Corel Draw and the Wacom drawing tablet. For somebody that's used to chalk and pencil, getting familiar with the digital tablet was tricky at first but I soon realized the importance and the capabilities of such a tool. It was not until a few years ago I ran across Poser and that began my concept of rendering. Since then, I have been concentrating on the rendering features in each of the pieces of software I use. However, once the image has been rendered, to give it my own artistic touch, I move the rendered image over to Photoshop where I perform my post work. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I just finished writing a tutorial on how I paint things in post work. That has taken a large portion of my time but it was worth it. I have learned from others, so it's time I give something in return. Perfecting my technique and getting the right ideas for the next series of images has my immediate attention right now. Trying to get my name out there is a quite a project itself. Learning new things and experimenting with different programs has been an ongoing process for a long time. I am spending my time and concentration on learning vector based graphics and maybe next year, I would like to get my hands in 3D Studio Max and do some modeling and texturing. Photoshop is a program I would like to know better, as the possibilities are endless. Every time I am in the process of creating a new piece of work, I learn a new thing and it's such a great feeling. I know there are a large variety of programs out there and it is very hard to choose one to use exclusively. WHAT SOFTWARE DO YOU USE AND WHY? To support a variety of different programs I have to have a good, fast and reliable machine. Right now I am working on Dual Pentium III, 1 Ghz (2 Ghz total processing power) computer, with 2 GB of memory and four 60 GB HD's as well as a dual IBM G94 monitor setup. I really love this machine! It just flies!!! I like to use a few different pieces of software in combination but if I would have to choose only one, it would definitely be Photoshop. It's a strong, expandable, dependable program and it's pretty much the standard that most creative industries use, including the web development industry. Poser saves me lot of time and since I started to put "ready models" into my images, I spend a lot less time than before. I love to play around with morphing dials and all those beautiful skin textures available. how can you resist! Then, there is Bryce.. Hmm, well what kind of sky would you like to put into your scene? A house, perhaps? I think this combination really works great for me, right now anyway. I just can't get used to lighting in Bryce and that's the only complaint I had, still have and probably always will have. Luckily, there are other programs that can fix all of that. WHY DO YOU LIKE 3D ART? I like the power of it! It's very different from the classic form of art, in which once you have painted something it stays there forever. Digital art has wider range of possibilities: cutting and pasting, changing colors instantly without disturbing your render, erasing, using layers, animation, etc. In today's technologically advanced world, it is a very much wanted form of expression. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? When I am creating something, I let my imagination run wild. There are no limits to any art form as I am creating my dreams and visions. My art is nothing more than a reflection of my personality and my state of mind, from the moment I start, to the time I finish. Everything can be inspiring; things that surround me, people, loved ones and nature. The greatest inspiration I find in dreams, music, lyrics and motion pictures, especially the ones based on historic events with lot's of glamour and, of course, futuristic Sci-Fi productions. It happens, sometimes, my mind is just bursting with constant new ideas, while other times there is nothing in it..emptiness, or dry spell, if you wish. Working too long on one thing makes me loose patience and sense for detail, so therefore I spread the work on the image over several days. I like to look at it the next day to see what kind of impression it leaves on me. That's an excellent way of seeing some mistakes that I probably would have overlooked the day before. Right now I get a great deal of influence from Baroque and Renaissance styles, as you can probably see from my latest images. I have never admired just one particular artist because each has something unique to give, such as different ways of expression and techniques I can learn from. HOW HAS THIS ONLINE COMMUNITY (RENDEROSITY) ENHANCED YOUR WORK, REALTIONSHIP AND LEARNING? I think it's very important to belong to a community. The amount of inspiration I get from this community is overwhelming sometimes. There are so many artists here willing to share opinions, art, help and criticism. All of it is very beneficial in growth as an artist. I have met some very dear people here that I was fortunate enough to become friends with. I have learned about different techniques from artists here through their tutorials, their tips and thoughts. The same way as I have learned from others, I am happy to know that someone out there has learned something from me too. Most importantly, by displaying artwork here in the galleries, you never know who is going to spot your work and like it enough to engage you in your next big project! Drazenka picky's gallery
