Captain Jack is Back!

July 11, 2006 5:34 pm

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum ~ The Pirates of The Caribbean (Dead Man's Chest) are back ~ this time the good, bad, and the ugly are in search of the key and chest of the notorious Davy Jones, which safeguards the secret to life and/or death to a multitude of characters.

The fans of the first in the trilogy of pirate adventures (The Pirates of The Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl) will be delighted to see the original main characters revive their roles. Back are: Johnny Depp as the swaggering, mascara wearing Captain Jack Sparrow; Orlando Bloom as the handsome Will Turner; Keira Knightly as the breathtakingly beautiful Elizabeth Swann; along with many of the returning minor characters, including the comic relief of the bumbling duo Mackenzie Crook (Ragetti) and Lee Arenberg (Pintel).

Although action propels the movie ? love (found, lost, and deceptive) is the underlying theme that drives the plot. Surprisingly, Dead Man's Chest is not just an action adventure story, but a love-story ? the love between father and son, friendship, and the love and betrayal of love between man and woman. Whereas the first movie only touched on the love triangle between Captain Jack, William, and Elizabeth ? in Dead Man's Chest their entanglement plays a major subplot.

Of course love takes center-stage to the CGI work! With any movie associated with the Disney Studios, the CGI special effects are expected to be on the cutting edge, and CGI enthusiasts will not be disappointed. The motion capture, and subsequently its computer generated characters, are flawless. The most mind-boggling scene revolved around the three-way sword fight upon the giant waterwheel. During the battle I kept thinking ? how did they do that?

Even with a running time of just under two and a half hours there is not a moment that the movie drags. The story is well written, wonderfully edited, and expertly directed. The actors' performances are pure perfection (from the main characters to the minor players). As already mentioned the CGI work was phenomenal. Tons of laughs, thrills, suspense, romance, and a touch of heart-tugging (just a touch).

If you have not experienced the first movie in this series it is imperative that you rent The Pirates of The Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl before venturing to the theatre. Even if you are a fan of the original pirate adventure, a review of Curse of the Black Pearl will make your moving going experience even better, as Dead Man's Chest relies heavily on the plot of the first.

If your movie viewing is limited this summer, you have to put The Pirates of The Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest on top of your must see list!

I did see "Dead Man's Chest" on openning day and it is a must see. And it will help to have seen "The Curse of the Black Pearl". It is definitely a keeper. Now to get on DVD to catch all the CGI stuff and try to catch them acting. Meaning to catch the CGI and other FX that seems to be off just a little bit. I may have to see it a couple dozen times, but it will be worth it.

I love the original and the sequel was quite the exciting treat! Thanks for the great review - I was surprised to see my favorite movie being reviewed here on Renderosity! Knew I loved this place. :)

Excellent review Dee-Marie! The fam and I have soooo been waiting for this movie (we must have watched the first one at least 50 times :D)! My favorite line from the first film was Captain Jack saying: "Now...bring me that horizon."

most important. Before seeing this movie... what the end of the credits on the FIRST one. If you don't see the bit at the very end (after the Dolby Stereo credit rolls) you will not understand why the monkey is undead. Likewise, watch til the very end on the second. There is a very funny last scene.

As sequels go this one is outstanding and everybit as entertaining as the first with a surprise re-introduction of one of the characters from The Curse of the Black Perl. The CG effects of Davy Jones and his crew are amazing rivaling that of Gollum in Lord of the Rings.

I definitely want to see them all.
