New Site Mail!!

LillianH · May 10, 2006 11:11 am

FUNCTIONALITY CHANGES 1.) Site Mail works more like email than instant messaging. 2.) You can archive "inbox" items only. Items that you send to another member will automatically be sent to your "sent items" folder. You can delete items from you "inbox/sent items/archive" as you could before. You can also "unarchive" any archived item. 3.) Instead of receiving a notification that a message has been received there is a flag and a date displayed in your sent items folder on the message. Otherwise, the "read" and "read date" will be empty. In order for something to be flagged as "read", you (or the recipient) will actually have to click the "subject" of the message and view it in it's entirety. Otherwise it remains "unread". 4.) Site Mail utilizes the FCK editor identical to ForumPro (minus the "upload image" option). 5.) If you click on the sender's name, it will allow you to message them directly and auto-populated their username in the "TO" box. WEIRDNESS FROM CONVERSION 1.) Since there was no "sent items" functionality in the old system, suddenly everything you have sent to anyone that has not been deleted by the recipient will appear in your "sent items" folder. 2.) The "read" and "read date" will not appear on any items since there was not a way to abstract that information from the old system. ALSO NOTE that anything you archived will appear in your "archived" folder, which could include previously sent items that you opted to archive upon sending in the old system. When you click to view the item, it will at that time acquire a "read" flag and "read date" because the old system managed to archive items by sending an item to you from you. 3.) All of the messages that notify you "xxxxx has received your message" cannot be converted since they have no sender associated with them. 4.) The link notifying you that you have new messages will appear to the right of "xxx members currently online".

COOL :-)

The one thing I miss is that I could easily save all my IMs simply by saving the one webpage on which they all appeared, and then I could delete all the messages. Now, all the messages are accessed individually only... so I have to go through each one and save them that way. It's a pain. But I shouldn't complain too loudly because the formatting options RULE! Sorry for being so negative. Thank you for the new system. hugs

I can get used to it. Note to others: If, like me, you archived every message you ever sent, so you could read the thread later, you will find major redundancy in your "Sent Items". Under "Sent Items" scan the sent dates. If you find a duplicate date (directly above or below that date) then look to the left and find your name. Click that box next to your name. Coninue browsing the list. When you have marked all redundancies.. go to the bottom and click "Delete". Your mail archives and sent items will now be purged of replication. Otherwise, seems easy to use and maintain. Good job from Dave :^)

the new system is cumbersome and I cannot initially see any advantages. Previously I knew at a glance whether new messages had arrived Whether the new system is equally straightfoward will emerge as inmail arrives. Presumably messages are deleted after six months as previously. The list of archived items seems particularly obscure through you not including a column for the names of the recipients. It would have been a nice touch to have enabled a sub-sort of messages to any individual. These are just first thoughts. It may grow on me! Cliff.

Ok, Just came on site. I am totally confused and so far how it works and where my messages are has totally eluded me. As a merchant especially with a new product just releasesd I am somewhere between "what the heck happened" and "Not another learning curve." cheerio lululee

Uh Oh! Sorry....I'm confused too! :-) notification on my pages of a new message that just came in? I have to actually GO to my email Inbox, before I know if I have a new message?? I'll never remember to do that! lol Before, it was so easy to know! Also....even though I'm already signed into the site....I had to sign in AGAIN, to get to my that necessary? I also have to sign in AGAIN to get to the forum....even though I had not left the site, or signed out. OK...maybe I'm just sleepy! :-) Anita

Do we have to wait for new messages to find our old ones? Where can I find these folders???

cliff-dweller ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 10 May 2006

Looks like a very nice set up for composing messages...thank you!! Can you tell me if there is a limit for the # of characters a message can have as there was with the old system, and if so, how many?? Thank you!! BTW, it would have been nice to know this change was coming...I would have liked to save my archived messages all in one "Save Page As" before the new setup was in it goes...

nongo ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 10 May 2006

Wow, I can finally type an opinion????? I really don't like this new forum set up, it's "clunky" & visually unappealing and difficult for most folks to use, and we've lost so many people who used to check in once or twice a day... I've received so many messages from members who Don't like this new system, but ultimately we have go get used to it cause they're NOT about to change it!!!!! Maybe when all the "bugs" get worked out we might make some sense out of it????? Arrrrgggghhh!!!!!!! Akemi

"Do we have to wait for new messages to find our old ones? Where can I find these folders???" Just click on the 'messaging' link at the top :D

NekhbetSun ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

My opinion? if it aint broke, don't fix it...seemed much easier the old way...this signing in again to get messages and signing in to forums is a major PITA !...could someone please splain why this is necessary? :o)

Asylumc3 ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

ummm..I have an inbox and I have to resign to this also? My memory is never going to handle this, lol. So far the site changes have been ok to handle except for the constant resigning in at every turn. They are well worth the change. But this one, I don't know it's very cumbersome to navigate nd the notification sucks, sorry guys :(. Maybe it will just take time.

StaceyG ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

Also you will have link in the header that says You have 1 new messages (or however many) it is just in a different spot. So you will know when you receive new Site Mail just as you did before:) As for the character limits, I'll have to ask the programmers and get back to you with that info NekhbetSun, You shouldn't have to sign in again and again to receive messages or to the forums, just once a day as long as you are accepting Renderosity cookies and clicking the remember me button... The reason for the double log in for now is because the forums, marketplace and now Site mail reside on one server while the rest of the community resides on another. Once all is converted to PHP, it will be one login as before. Thanks Stacey

StaceyG ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

Okay on Character limits, at this time there is no limit in place like there was on the previous messaging system. Hopefully it can stay this way as long as we don't have tons of members writing books, LOL:)

RodolfoCiminelli ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

All change that is for the improvement is welcome...!!!. Rodolfo

StaceyG wote: "Okay on Character limits, at this time there is no limit in place like there was on the previous messaging system. Hopefully it can stay this way as long as we don't have tons of members writing books, LOL:)" Thanks for getting the info so quickly!! That's great news...I promise, NO BOOKS!! :D That'll be nice, though, since there have been a couple of times when I needed to break a message up into separate pieces. Thanks Stacey!

etomchek ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

Ok- I'm having a slight problem. Is there any way possible, after sending a message, to get a message sent page or something instead of going dircetly back to the messages? I (and I'm sure a lot of other people) get back to this message page, let it sit for a bit, and thin hit the refresh button to see if I have new messages. Well, it sends another copy of the message I sent to its recipient, and I didn't know this and hit the refresh button several times. Needless to say the person I sent the message to now has lots of mail.

davidoblad ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

Related to size limits on Email: They say one picture is worth a thousand words. The average gallery pic is 200K. One Pic is way lots more than a thousand words (actually about 10 book chapters, but who's counting.) Anyway, you really need to set the mail (Sent Items/Archive) with two columns depicting sender/receiver. I see when opening the IM/Email that the info for from/to is available.. Please fix this so I can tell the difference (at a glance) from those I sent and those I received. Best to Rosity from Dave :^)

I like it. am I missing it, or is there an address book? :)itsumama

Asylumc3 ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

Thanks for the info Stacey. It was easier today after I spent sometime learning it. Can't wait for the change over. Will have to deal until then. I don't use the remember me because my daughter and her friends use the com for thier accounts also. Ok now we need a spell checker. Btw, adore how this place is evolving!!!

visionart ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

The IM... You have 1 message,is always displayed on the top left of page but there is no message there. You have 1 message display will never vanish and I am constantly checking for messages even though nothing is there. Is there something you can do at your end as I have tryed with no luck at all...otherwise this system is brilliant!

mejed ( posted at 12:00AM Thu, 11 May 2006

Hmmm....I miss the IM. It was quicker. We`ll see.

CarolSassy ( posted at 12:00AM Fri, 12 May 2006

I enjoy change. It's a sign of the times, however, I don't see that this will be quicker. May I ask what purpose and goal they wanted to achieve?

cornelp ( posted at 12:00AM Fri, 12 May 2006

I am with Visionart. I used to be able to see the messages on top of the website, now since the new forums and the new message system, I dont see. I keep on having to go into the message system to see any new messages. Can you guys do something on that? It would benefit quite a lot, specially for merchants. Change is good, if its for a purpose. New message system is really kewl, specially the new options, just add a feature to see new messages on top of page, as it used to be. Thank You...

kimariehere ( posted at 12:00AM Fri, 12 May 2006

not happy with it at all seems no one is even writing with this new method . feel like i have lost all touch here. I wish you would turn it back to the way it was ... not happy i am sorry but i miss the old way badly . Forgive me ,i really have tried to adjust and just dont feel that this new way is a good thing

StaceyG ( posted at 12:00AM Fri, 12 May 2006

Okay let me see if I can address some questions/issues etomchek and davidoblad - I have sent both your suggestions to the programmers itsumama- No there is no "address" book Visionart and cornelp - The glitch with the 1 new message that won't go away should be fixed now and message me if you are still seeing it even after opening up and reading all items in your inbox. cornelp, you do still have the link that tells you there are however many new messages for you. Its just in a different spot. Its in the header off to the right of where the Welcome member, date, time, number of users online.... Hope this helps address some questions/issues, if I missed any just nudge me:) Stacey

davidoblad ( posted at 12:00AM Fri, 12 May 2006

If you add the from/to info column to the archive list then you can completely remove the sent choice in the dropdown. This means we only have two concerns: New mail and Archive. (sound familiar?) After reading a new mail we can choose to delete it or archive it. When we decide to review a message thread later, from self to Mr.Rosity, we can just open the archive list and see, from the two sender/receiver columns, the specific thread we want to review/re-read. In short: The sent-mail list is redundant and incomplete (already). If the archive shows both columns, that's all that needed, besides the new mail. This strongly conforms to what we are already used to and maintains your new IM/mail structure. Thanks from Dave :^)

clifftoppler ( posted at 12:00AM Fri, 12 May 2006

I'm baffled. I've sent two messages today but can find no record of them anywhere. Surely they should be at the top of the Sent list (accessed via Messaging) and either checked or not depending on whether they have been read? Or am I missing something (as usual)? The system did say they had been sent when I released them.. Whether anyone has sent me any messages I know not. There is nothing showing to the right of ..surfers currently online. That is if I AM looking in the right spot, and would it not be sensible for something to show even if there are no new messages, say New Messages: 0. Sorry to be troublesome, Cliff.

Lyne ( posted at 12:00AM Sat, 13 May 2006

OMG! 183 items in my SENT??? I NEVER archive personal IM's I have sent to friends...that is why they are PERSONAL and instant MESSAGES...once I send them, they are gone...and I THOUGHT I HAD SOME PRIVACY!?? This means all the messages I have sent over a long time sit somewhere on a server to be read by any staff? I do remember reading somewhere about the change in the TOS or whatever you call it, that messages could be read if anyone wanted to...but it did not occur to me that things I NEVER SAVED in any manner would be saved. :( Of course I deleted all immeadiatly. But this means EVERY TIME I SEND A MESSAGE HERE, I MUST GO TO MY SENT AND DELETE IT FOR PRIVACY? and if I do that, does it get "gone" so the person I sent it to does not get it? CONFUSED AND HATING THE CHANGES!

jjean21 ( posted at 12:00AM Sat, 13 May 2006

Personally I preferred the old IM system, IT was quick and efficient. Yesterday I went to find a message with a link I needed and had to trapse all over the place to get to it. Very frustrating...what ever happened to the old adage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'?
