Yet Another Realistic Skin Technique for P6+

Skill Level: Intermediate / Views: 3815 / System Requirements: Poser 6+

UPDATED 3/17/2009 at 7:30 PM EST (BROKEN LINK FIXED)After months of trial-and-error, research, and raw effort, I've arrived at a skin shading technique that I believe is actually worth sharing with others! It's optimized for M4/V4, but it can be easily adapted to virtually any figure.

Let's begin with a "before" shot.  This is default Michael 4 with a texture set of my own design applied.  A minimal shader of 4 nodes has been implemented.  Basically, trans-mapped eyebrows are applied to the texture map with a  Blender node, and the output is plugged straight into the Diffuse and Specular channels.  Also, a Math >> Add node grayscales the skin map and combines it with the brow map, and the result is plugged into the Bump channel.  As you can see, this rudimentary shader is better than nothing, but it's far from anything that could properly be called "realism."  Let's fix that!

I would agree that this is an impressive, albeit rather complicated, use of Poser to produce a realistic skin texture. I also applaud your tenacity at figuring all this out. At the same time, it shows the failure of Poser to provide an easier method of producing realistic skin textures. After all, Poser was designed originally for posing figures and then rendering them posed. So, you'd think Frontier (Smith Micro) would offer an easier method or presets for producing realistic skin textures. Thanks for sharing your tutorial.

The Fresnel node is for glass or water - something clear with refraction and reflection.

Thank you for helping us Poser illiterates. I had a Jaw Dropping Reaction to this.. The complexity of the Material room is Scary. I wish it were a Downloadable PDF file (Hint) to follow off line rather than just a printer friendly version / option. As this is something to keep in the CD Archives. Thanks again, and I really hope you convert it to PDF.

Thank you. I'm definitely going to follow this through in the Material Room, if only for the experience. But I have one question about your complicated Fresnel calculation. Is this because you don't like using the Poser Fresnel node? If so, please could you say what you find wrong with it, so we know what to look out for. Thank you.

Gee whiz, all of that to get this? This is why I can't bring myself to use Poser, I just don't have the time to learn all of that. The results are incredible, but how does anyone just learn all of that? Thank goodness for places like this and persons like you who've done all the hard work! I have P5,6,7 and still can't get myself to use either. I may come back and actually walk through this to see the results! Well done!
