I've been asked for a tutorial on hair painting, so here it is!

Alright, Ive been asked to do a tutorial about my hair painting technique and now I have finally managed to make it available to everyone. But please let me say a few things before we start.;-)
This tutorial is about the way I am doing the hair in my images. It is a way that is working for me, but might not be the best way for everyone else.
I have read many tutorials of great artists but wasnt able to make their technique my own and so this is something quite important to keep in mind read as many tutorials as you can and try to find the elements in them that will work best for you, experiment with them and dont ever give up. Finding your own way of painting things is much easier than trying to copy someone elses style entirely. And believe me - my first hair painting attempts were absolutely terrible. I still don't think that I'm too good at it at all.;-)

So, what do we need? It would be very helpful if you have any graphics tablet available. Im using a small Wacom Volito for my images and thats enough for me. Then, of course a graphics program that will support layers and your graphics tablet . It is quite important that the program will support the pen pressure and I am also using a brush setting that should have a similar name to fading and that will fade the lines at their ends (well, it just helps to get finer hairstrands) Just experiment with the settings to see, what will be the best for you. I dont know if it is possible to get good results with a mouse, as Ive never tried that but I think that a tablet is strongly recommended.

Ill be using my Sadira image for the tutorial you can see the finished version in my gallery to get an idea of what it looks like in a larger version this may be important if you want to see a little more of my brush strokes.

Ok, enough babbling for now lets start!

I finally got back to this today. great tut. In the highlightes overlay layer I would select pixesl first so it doesn't hilight the underlying skin. Great tutorial. I need to do it again several times. I think I know what you mean by a smooth brush now. there is an option to choose smooth in the brush options.

fantastic!!! but what do you mean by a smooth brush? do you mean a brush with darker in the middle and lighter towards outside ie not as hard? Love esther
