Description

I am sorry to make a collage of this, but I feared too many postings of the same table would bore you all. This magnificent one piece structure started off as a piece of North Carolina Marble. As I said it is a single piece. At the time I shot this, they had not completed the table, in these marble tables they place a small pump for water. Then just as the dragons at the palace in Beijing do, water flows from the mouths of these dragons. These dragons are supposed to be swimming. Something you have thus far missed seeing with the wooden tea tables is how many coats of polyurethane are on them. Tea Service in China is a messy affair. Unlike westerners, the Chinese, especially Southern Chinese or Cantonese wash their eating a drinking utensils in hot water immediately before use, like right at the dinner table. Often tea is used, the first of the tea is not steeped, and it takes time for the flavor to come out. So they wash their eating and drinking utensils in boiling hot tea and then pour out the tea into a bowel on the table. But with these tables, you simply pour the the hot water, or tea into the reservoir in the middle of the tea table. As for this particular piece; as it is with wood, scraps are made into carvings. Larger scraps are made into tea tables, smaller scraps are made into other unique pieces of art. Because the marble was not well blended and would easily sheer of used for flooring, and the fact it is difficult to get a uniform look from such pieces, the Chinese will use it for artwork. I inquired into this a lot, thinking that they did this to prevent waste, when in fact, the piece this was cut from was considered scrap in America. No one wanted it. Not even American sculptors! So, as the Chinese Overseas Shipping Company (COSCO) sat in the harbor in North Carolina empty, she refilled for a return trip with American scraps, yes, maybe even an old tree stump or two, as well as what we might consider trash, or recyclables. In another series I hope to take you down on the farm and show you just how, or why it was I lost all that weight. Be sure to click that link, and check the full size image for a good view of the details of this craftsmanship.

These tables must be very beautiful.. Unfortunately I get a lot of backwash light on my monitor that obscures the finer details...
