Description

Have been working on the rabbit this morning. I will not use this wood board for pastel again. It is not ideal for this medium. Now I know :) Dont know if I will do more on this.

The patterns and textures look great in this image of the handsome hare, deeply contemplating its existence atop the field of green, Helle. Perhaps the green is too vivid and could be toned down.

First of all, re the green: I don't think it's the green per se that's a problem, I think it's the saturation and depth you put into it. That would be fine if the rabbit weren't the hues that HE is. The problem is only that the saturation/depth of the greens are too strong for the beige-r, browner, and lighter hues of the rabbit: The rabbit would stand out more with a lighter background. (Though I have to say, I really like the greens themselves---I mean they're very deep in hue.) This is less of a closeup, but we can still see your careful detail. You did really fine things with black strokes, and then contrasting them with whites (or light hues). And greens and browns. You also got the flow of the animal's hairs, some going on diagonals, some in curves and sweeps, etc. And you got the crouched position of a rabbit waiting or just thinking. (He's thinking about the Theory of Relativity. He's got a degree in Particle Physics...) A very integrated visceral portrait of a rabbit, with serenity about it too. And yeah, the green is too deep for it, but you did a beautiful animal drawing with details that aren't easy to get in pastels, even moreso considering how long you were away from this medium. The rabbit feels finished to me, it's too bad it's so hard to redo or lighten the background. I'd like some of that green for myself, though...it's rich stuff...A beautiful animal pastel...
