Description

In my first summer outside of Berwyn, Illinois—after 3 years in that bland netherworld—I found myself back in the house I grew up in. I saw the burial places of childhood pets (how many ex-mortal goldfish have contributed their nutrients to flower gardens?) I can’t remember how many childhood goldfish are buried in a particular Chicago back yard, but I remember spending time, walking around with my camera: photographing the full moon and various constellations. There was a time, in Prague, as I walked through Vaclavske Namesti, looking up at the night sky and sending greetings to Orion, the hunter. On the night that I saw woodlice, I saw Orion. I sent greetings. Shortly after spotting Orion in the southerly sky, I spotted woodlice, a whole congregation of them, amid a riot of hostas! All of them were mature adults, dark in a common indication that they’d survived more than a single winter. I spent an hour with them, and now, I find that I look forward to the possibility of finding woodlice in the Czech Republic…in Prague, and if fate favors my desires, in a suburb of Prague, no matter how unlikely that seems… …as always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting! Things are a bit hectic but I hope to be commenting and interacting a lot more soon.

They are the cutest little bugs, humble and helpful. I hope you find the little cuties wherever you go!

Once again I am reminded of the very alien forms of life with which we share this planet. I have many memories growing up in Ontario and finding woodlice here and there. Under the odd forgot plank of wood. Under a garden rock. One time, wandering on the dirt floor of my parents garage. They get everywhere and yet no one ever complained about them. I thought that odd for some reason. Very cool shot.

This is a wonderful find and a terrific shot. I've never seen more than one at a time. What do you suppose they are talking about?
