This photo was taken yesterday, at approximately the same spot from where I took the photo that I posted yesterday ("Street Works"). It is at the end of a big storm; the snow is still falling. Schools are open, normal activities are still going on, people are walking on slightly slippery sidewalls. The snow that has collected on most streets and sidewalks have been plowed away during the previous night. The snow that is on the surfaces is still clean; the whole scene looks almost like a fairytale. In a busy town, the winter looks its best just after a storm. Things start to become ugly, the next day; from almost pure white, the snow takes the color of dirt, pollution, oil, etc. Often, after a storm, because of the use of salt, sand and pebbles, for making the street and sidewalks less slippery and for reducing injuries from fall, salted water started to collect at the street curbs. Everything becomes so dirty : boots, coats, gloves, eyeglasses, tires, cars, walls, stairs, etc.; winter hell on earth. We get used to it, we know how to cope with it, but most of us hates winter even if we pretend to like it. It will be like that for two more months, between fairytale and hell. My big challenge of being outside, during winter, is my unstoppable running nose when it is in the cold; covering it with a scarf is useless. At least, because the houses are well heated and thermo-insulated with many layers, it is comfortable inside.
