Description

Wind farm in Nebraska. On our way back from Kansas I took a LOT of pictures out the car window. Coming upon these windmills just as the sun was going down was one of those special visual moments when you're glad to have a camera in your hand! I'd never been on the prairie before this trip. When the sun went down that evening, the whole sky, as far as I could see in every direction, was showing a rainbow of colors. I'd heard the prairie sky described as "the bowl of the sky," but never understood that phrase until I was out there. The sky really does seem like a bowl inverted over the land. I was sure I'd be bored out of my mind as we drove through the Midwest, but it was quite beautiful and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Look at that gorgeous light! The golden-blue hour, eh? I'll bet you got a lot of great captures, I always wish I could do that but I'm usually the one driving ;~p This is marvelous!

A new term for me but most appropos. Wonderful glow... Reminds me of the gigantic piece of a windmill tower we saw moving down the interstate. :*

Given the uproar when these things first started appearing, they may not 'blend into the landscape' as we were first assured but they do make an interesting focal point.Just imagine that picture without the windmills.

There have been dull and chilly trips from Chicago to Pontiac, Illinois--with a truck load of I-Cat X-ray units, dental chairs, hygenist's stations, etc...and with such loads bound for downstate Illinois, not only have we passed wind-farms beneath the bowl of the sky, but we passed such fields in the process of sprouting...those blades are enormous and are often transported by trucks that drive very, very slowly, especially when you're behind them on a one lane back-road in the no-passing zone. That's actually when you see how whompin' big those things are! And to see them as you saw them is a sight that I have come to cherish. There are such wind-farm fields just outside of Dortmund, Germany, and others in the Czech Republic. Seeing them in the Midwestern USA, however, is quite an experience, since they're just as big as the implied inverted bowl. Here in Chicago, we call that bowl a dome. We've just gotta be diff'rent, ya know. I love this shot. It's quite atmospheric in more ways than are overtly obvious. I love the colors, the sense of twilight, the sweeping grace of those triple blades. In short, this is marvelous. Perfect. Gorgeous. I can almost hear them; they make an impressive "whump-whump-whump-whump-whump-whump" noise at about, oh, say...a good 80-whumps-per-minute.

Hi there! Trying to make as many comments as possible but... I love highway shots and traveling by car. You and the road and the scenery flying by. And to have a camera just makes it all the better. This is a great shot that really puts you in the car and is infused with that particularly American sense of motion. They way you captured the starkness of the windmills at dusk is wonderful and quite unexpected. One of the many curious sights that keep you moving on to see what's over that next horizon. The Midwest can be dull, but also nicely contemplative sometimes and we do get some fairly amazing skies. Great work as always and thanks for all your kind words.

Looks like they are all lined up for some aerobics class. I know what you mean about the prairie, it can be very beautiful. After awhile you are hoping to see something above sea level, a small hill, a pile of dirt, a bump in the road, anything that isn't flat.

A beautiful capture with a super light that gives it a wonderful atmosphere. I like any sort of landscape as I think there is always something to see even when it is flat.

Fantastic shot, Tara! The lighting is awesome, and the scope of this shot is almost beyond understanding unless you've seen the size of these turbines. One blade is an oversize load! I've seen the blades and hubs for these things being hauled through KC. They are huge!
