Description

A view of the National Museum in Prague from Wenceslaus Square (which is actually a fairly long boulevard). There is a statue of Saint Wenceslaus on a horse in this photo, though it's hard to make out. Our apartment was very close to this spot, but the National Museum, unfortunately, is closed for renovations until 2017. Wenceslaus Square has been the scene of many political demonstrations in Czech history. Some info about Saint Wenceslaus, from Wikipedia: "Wenceslaus I c. 907 – September 28, 935), or Wenceslas I, was the duke of Bohemia from 921 until his assassination in 935, in a plot by his own brother, Boleslav the Cruel. His martyrdom, and the popularity of several biographies, quickly gave rise to a reputation for heroic goodness, resulting in his being elevated to sainthood, posthumously declared king, and seen as the patron saint of the Czech state. He is the subject of "Good King Wenceslas", a Saint Stephen's Day carol written over 900 years later, in 1853, that remains popular to this day. An enduring legend claims a huge army of knights sleep inside Blanik, a mountain in the Czech Republic. The knights will awake and under the command of St. Wenceslaus and bring aid to the Czech people when they face ultimate danger. There is a similar great legend in Prague which says that when the Motherland is in danger or in its darkest times and close to ruin, the equestrian statue of King Wenceslaus in Wenceslaus Square will come to life, raise the army sleeping in Blanik, and upon crossing the Charles Bridge his horse will stumble and trip over a stone, revealing the legendary sword of Bruncvik. With this sword, King Wenceslaus will slay all the enemies of the Czechs, bringing peace and prosperity to the land." Please zoom.

First, if you have a brother named "Boleslav the Cruel," you might wanna avoid having him over for Passover. Or Easter. Second, Wenceslaus had an international reputation---that famous carol (Good King Wenceslaus) got its music from Sweden, I believe, and it was made famous in England. But third, this is one blaze of a photo! You captured/brought out the fire of all these lights. One of the things I love about your work is that you dive in with all you've got, you are willing to go to whatever source calls you, and once there, you are determined to bring it to us with your whole conviction. You caught night lights as a huge symphony here. And with that uninterruputed black sky, the square has an even stronger presentation. I'm not sure I'd walk into this place, if it looked this intense in person---I might be afraid the world was coming to an end a bit too soon---but as a photo, it's wonderful. When you come back from trips, you make the world look like one massive carnival of sights, sounds and experiences. I really like this. Night lights explode into the night...

That Wenceslaus story would make a good plot for a fantasy novel or a cavalry-saves-the-day movie. It would be easy to do with CG, having the statue come to life and tear off to save the world. This is just the right lighting for the scene, too. Suddenly, on a dark night, the lights in the square go up, brighter and brighter, and the King is awakened ...

Yes. Well. Ahem.

Nice shot! :)
