I thought I posted this yesterday after having seen the post from dochtersions (Mies) called, "Around the World in 80 Days". But, alas I must have messed up somehow. Anyway, I created this in response to the poem written by Mies. I am like a preschooler with digital art and also I do not have the programs I hear you good digital artists such as Mies refer to when posting a lovely digital piece. This I created using photoshop and some photos I took of the sunset over the Oostvardersplassen in the Netherlands. I added a couple of patches of color here and there for variety and then blurred and softened everything. Just imagine a preschooler trying to create a valentine to take home to her mom or dad. She works diligently with the blunt scissors and school glue. She is concentrating with her tongue sticking out as she works. The end result is crude to say the least, but she has poured her heartful of love into it. That is how I made this for Mies. I know it is crude, but I hope she understands my intention was to send love and support to her in response to her poem and particularly this part:
"And it was Miesje which was killed via whisper
without splendour
empty, plundered, abandoned
in their holey cheese of hate."
The heart represents to me that empty, plundered, abandonded place and the Miesje they thought they killed in their holey cheese of hate. But, she is not really dead. She is surrounded by love and light and that love and light is finding it's way in to fill the emptiness with warmth and love. The hurt and helplessness has an escape as the love pours in. The darkness runs out and is dissapated by the love and light which overcomes the darkness.

My dearest Katherine, my eyes are filled with tears when reading your words, your intention, which is so beautiful in picture, plus in your love-filled words. This here is a great and precious gift to me, and surely it can fill the gaps in the cheese; it soothes the wounds in the small child, now finding love. This here is also something to warm her heart, from which Miesje says to you, "an intense thanks". You are an extraordinary friend, artist and person, dear Katherine.

How very touching, and I see Jacomina was really moved by it. Before I talk about the piece, I want to say that I really thought I'd commented on this---I know I'd intended to when you posted it. But, to the piece, all my digital art is done in Photoshop, and often with a photo for its base. So there's nothing beginner-ish about using that, believe me. (I'm not saying that to suggest my Photoshop art is good, btw, just to say it's a terrific program for digital art.) And second, however much you feel like a kid with her tongue sticking out, you create beautiful results. (Besides, artists are all kids with their tongues sticking out...at base we're all finding the kid inside us when we create...) The piece radiates with all kinds of deep sunny hues, and beautiful pinks and oranges, and those bright yellows; and I love your thought that Mies, in her pain, is surrounded, hugged by the love of others. And I can see she's very moved by that. The black center is, itself, softened around the edges, like a feeling that's fading. So whatever pain is in there is giving way to the light around it. Beautifully done and articulated, and a very moving gift for Mies. (And btw, this feels like real watercolor. I would've thought so, if you hadn't told us it was digital.)
