Description

Some of the re-enactors at the Collings Foundation; I'm sure there are anachronist elements in the picture, but pretty realistic overall. Actually, the young fellow seems to have a Luftwaffe insignia on his garrison cap (Feldmütze?); help me out, guys!

Well if he was manning the 88mm you showed earlier it would be fine. It's an interesting picture But other than mixing the uniforms I couldn't be any kind of an expert. The others look to be Heeres "Grunts"

Nice pic showing some falschrimjager mixed in with wermacht type, that explains the luftwaffe eagle, the 3 soldiers on the left are wearing 3rd type airborne smocks (they unzip completely, not like the early types that you had to step into), & sand coloured pants for temperate climats: italy, balkans & france. In the last few years of the war you would see all kinds of mixing in the uniforms, but here i would say this early 1944, hope this helps!

What we have are 3 paras, an Army officer (the one with the bullion collar insignia, of undetermined rank as we can't see his shoulder boards), and a corporal (furthest right). The last 2 are Army/Heer. The officer has ribbons for the Iron Cross 2nd Class over the Russian Front in one of his buttonholes. I have no gripe with any of the outfits. Mixed units did arise out of the chaos of battles drawn out. I notice that one para has a rather squashed canteen cup. I could go on, dissecting each and every person and team elements, but this should suffice. Good pic!

Thanks to all for input, insight, and good words! There was also an older officer wearing a Feldgendarmerie (Kettenhünde) gorget, but I didn't get any pix of him....

The guy 2nd from left appears to have an MP40 tucked under his right arm, pistol grip just showing, and the mag pouch on his belt. Also notice the Kar98 in the tent has a sniper scope. Not a good idea to be captured carrying that. The young guy in the Luftwaffe cap appears to have a pilots collar tab sewn to the side of his cap. Really cool image.Love these re-enactments.Saw loads of GI's in Belgium last year for the Bulge anniversary, only saw 2 Germans, at the German War Cemetery. A group of Americans held a memorial by the King Tiger in La Glieze, in full Waffen SS regalia. They had to get the Town Mayors permission and the conscent of 60% of the residents, and where only allowed to be in uniform for 1 hour on the understanding they did not move away from the tank.

I bow to the other uniform experts, but I thought he was a tough looking Luftwaffe lad in the thumbnail. Looks like a squad from a pick-up unit during the last desperate days in 1945.

thanx to all the erudite ones who chimed in on this pic; I agree with Buffalo1 and louly...the young fellow makes me think of the Werewolves (if indeed they existed) and the later Operation Gladio, both of which make interesting reads on Wikipedia....

I'm no expert on this chapter of world history (or many others, for that matter) but I can say that this is a great and strangely moving photograph. I'm drawn to the expression the youngest soldier is wearing--he looks resolute, grim, and even a bit philosophical in a sort of hard-as-nails way. The composition of the photo is also quite well done; I love the "you're-there, looking-over-shoulders vibe of this picture, and anachronisms aside (though I haven't spotted any) it's a fantastic glimpse through time. It is also beautifully done!

Excellent shot! About that insignia, hmm... I not sure if I remember my own insignia when I served the air force! :)

I'm not an expert obviously, but I know that what the young guy wears is called Schiffchen (little ship?) due to it's shape. Feldmütze is what the officer and the man on the left are wearing. The young guy's Schiffchen is Luftwaffe in color and insignia making it a bit strange since all the others are army. All in all it's a strange mix of regular infantry (as can be seen by the white color on the corporal's shoulder boards), possibly airborne (although I do not believe in the khaki uniforms...), and air force. I do not believe in the polka dotted scarfs, nowhere in this army and I think the officer could have shaved... grin P.S. I like reenactments ;-)
