Description

Back in age of steam locomotion, passenger cars were heated using wood or coal-burning stoves. In the best of circumstances, this resulted in areas of the passenger compartment either being too hot or too cold. Oftentimes, on bumpy sections of track, the stoves overturned, spilling their dangerous contents about the area, frequently leading to fires as hot embers ignited the wooden passenger cars. In train wrecks, the conflagrations were of catastrophic magnitude with many fires erupting simultaneously, complicating rescue efforts. Eventually, locomotive steam was used to heat cars. As the age of steam transitioned to diesel-electric traction, heat was supplied to passenger cars using a steam generator located inside the shorter hood of the locomotive carbody. This method of providing climate control was eventually replaced by electricity, but surprisingly enough lasted into the 1980s. Today, those wispy tendrils of steam are no longer seen rising from the beneath undercarriages of passenger cars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All models either Wings3d or Bryce5 originals with postwork using PSP8 and Universe Image Creator. Volume clouds provide the steam effects. Thanks for lookin’!

Congratulations on a wonderful modeling job and render! Very nice writeup on the enviromental evolution of the trains as well - did not know that bit of steam beneath the trains was from the heating.
