Description

The Pfaltz DIIIa was an original German WW I fighter design that saw service in 1917 and 1918. It was considered inferior to the Albatross and Fokker fighters by pilots, but still found extensive service in the Imperial German Air Service mainly because of the strength of its airframe compared to more favored aircraft. It could withstand the forces of a steep dive that would tear the wings off more nimble but fragile planes and found its niche in diving attacks on observation balloons. Other than that very useful characteristic, the DIIIa was disliked for it's poor handling and the tendency of its plywood monocoque fuselage to warp, seriously affecting its performance. This aircraft sports the colors of Oblt. Rudolph Berthold, commander of "Berthold's Boys", Jasta 18. Berthold was known for the iron discipline and rigorous training that earned him the fierce loyalty of his men and the effectiveness of his Jasta. He was seriously wounded twice and survived the war only to lose his life at the hands of his own countrymen in the German post war turmoil in 1920. Pfaltz DIIIa: Excellent, finely detailed model crafted by Lucien-Philippe and generously shared for free here at Rendo. Thank you Luciene-Lilippe! (some texture tweaking and weathering down in the old mouldy basement by my crew.) Nieuport 17's: Another beautiful model by the same craftsman, and also free here at rendo. Pilot: Epici Lowpoly Enemy soldier here at Rendo and various clothing from here and there. Cinema C4d 6XL, Poser 10, Vue6Infinite, PS Cs3

Stunning scene Bill, looks like some nice models too.....nice addition to the ( not so ) low and slow catagory. In this centenary year I had planned to add some of these beautiful canvas kites to The Plants inventory, half the year gone....still I may get some together for Christmas....
