Description

I recently returned from a trip to Florida, where I met some amazing little birds- burrowing owls. In this particular area, these small owls live in underground burrows in empty lots amongst very populated developments. We were really fortunate to come across a pair that was taking a breather from the nesting business and had come out to check the surroundings. This one (who I presumed was the male) got guard duty and was most obliging to us human oglers by perching not two feet from us, all the while vigilantly watching for predators. As they are considered a "species of special concern", their homes have been roped off so that people don't disturb them or build on their nesting grounds. This one must have been quite used to people, as he really couldn't have cared less that we were busily photographing him at such close range. However, I wouldn't have wanted to get much closer than we did- those were some sharp talons and beak, and although they may be small, I wouldn't want to tangle with one! It was really thrilling to be able to see them in the wild and to be that close to one! Thanks for taking the time to look and hope you enjoy him as much as I did! :o) Take care! ~A
