Description

While on our way to the city of Camaguey we took a side trip the town of Trinidad (Trinity). Trinidad was founded in 1514 near the Rio Guaurabo, making it one of the oldest towns in the Western Hemisphere. For several hundreds of years the use of African slaves made it possible for the town to prosper in the sugar trade. At its height there were fifty sugar mills operating in the Valle de los Ingenios, or Valley of the Sugar Mills, just outside of town. By the late nineteenth century, with Cuba in revolt against Spain, the last sugar mills closed and Trinidad went into decline. Over the next one hundred years progress bypassed Trinidad which, ironically, helped to preserve many of its beautiful eighteenth century buildings. The town has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. Today Trinidad is a gritty little town of 74,000 whose main industry is tourism.

An outstanding composition, beautifully muted color tones & I would remove the word "Almost" from the phrase "Almost a painterly look to this" above - I could easily see this hanging in an art gallery...

Oh my. Light, composition, texture, postwork ... this is fantastic! I love the cobblestones and the architecture, and you've brought it all together and made it look its best, I'm sure. Wonderful image!

I've been gone for health reasons, then for work, and I've been too tired to come to RR but to look, for the most part. I'm leaving a smattering of comments this week, of which one will be in your gallery, because of the exceptional quality of your uploads one after the next, of late. I hope people zoomed this incredible shot all the way, because your postwork is gritty yet very finessed, almost architectural-draftsman-like, and yes, like a painting, but also like a highly complex drawing, with almost etch-like features. You did a tremendous job on this, Mark; and the photo, to begin with, was terrific---with its pronounced perspective-lines, the stairs spilling in from the left, the shade of that marvelous tree above the stairs, the dark-orangey hues giving way to lighter yellows, the very clear blues and greens on the right, and texture, texture, texture...When one looks full size, even the people stand out in clean and clear lines and such clarity in their hues. It's as if you went through every piece of clothing and brought out their presence. The shot's hues have an aged reminiscent look, and I think you've delicately shaded the edges and corners, as if this were an old keepsake yellowed by age---fitting for the nature of the town. I'm glad the commenters above agreed---I've always thought you were a treasure-chest who hasn't been discovered by the site at large; and I'm always glad when the artists I know (and deeply respect) agree with me 100%. (Tara and I have discussed this. And Brigitte and I have written about it.) A terrific shot, and wonderful post-treatment. Masterful.

I have to say something about some others, because I can't comment on any more right now: Your portraits of late have been masterful. Your latest (I think), a black and white of two women, was worthy of the finest photo-portraits I've seen. Terrific work on Las Hermanas, with hues, and a near-luminescense to their skin. Wonderful gazes too, and background detail, as well as in their clothes. Which doesn't in any way lessen the power of your previous portraits of the last month, of which 2 men come to mind...(2 portraits). I'll say more later, but I truly think you're a terrific photographer, and shots like that prove my point. And---skipping only because of time---I read your baseball story today, and was very touched by it. It felt wholly real, like it really happened. (I was as bad as BThompkins---spelling?---though I never got as far as 3d base.) And I was so struck by your style, I did a search and found all your writers gallery uploads, and read several. Mark, you're a writer. I mean, I knew that before; but your wholly-dedicated writing is sporadic, so one can forget. A few of them left me in tears. So I came here tonight to say I've seen, and read, hope to return for comments soon; and I've been mightily impressed. (The pieces on your mother and father were deeply touching. Maybe I'll comment on some earlier pieces, this summer.) Terrific and inspiring work. (And a loving bday dedi too...)

As always Mark, thank you for your very kind words. I was trying to figure out how to write to you since you had mentioned health issues. I hope things are much better. Glad to see you back. And a little confession between you and me, I am Billy Thompkins, although I only made it to second base before the teacher called me out. To this day I have very little interest in sports.
