Description

Harley Earl authorized the Frank Hershey design for the 1948 Cadillac, which incorporated the first automotive tailfins.Inspiration for the fins came from the Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft but it extended beyond the war, during the age when space rockets captured the popular imagination (1950s and 1960s). The style caught on throughout Detroit and eventually led to competition between Harley Earl and Virgil Exner over the size and complexity of tailfins, culminating with this on the 1959 Cadillac models.

Congrats on making Last Week In The Gallery! I've been playing hookey from Rendo so haven't been around much lately but this beauty caught my eye as soon as I saw it. Cadillac took tailfins to a new dimension. The 50s were the most creative years for automotive styling in the USA. Great fun and still appreciated for originality today. Fine POV and crop.
