Description

Blasting her way out of Tunnel #5 where she has been working steam on the slight upgrade through the ‘hole’, old number 382 emerges into sunlight. Southbound at the head of an eight car special she is clear of the reason some tunnels were known as “hell”. Imagine if you will, a solid object entering an air filled cylinder all the while belching smoke and steam. The mass of the object forces the air to move with the object and causes it to compress at a rate inversely proportional to the speed of the object and it begins to move at the velocity of the mass minus the friction co efficient of the..........er .....sorry...........got carried away there. Any way. Steam travel was not all it was cracked up to be. Ash, smoke, burning oil fumes , well you get the picture. If you lived on the “wrong side of the tracks” you lived down wind of those self same tracks. Now that you know where that saying came from you can now amaze you friends with your new found knowledge. If you already knew that well...................... Any how my humble attempt to portray what most people love about steam engines. Tons of smoke. ;) BTW: The railroads (especially in later years) didn’t think too highly of all the smoke. Not to mention governmental agencies that regulated things like that. It meant the engineer was riding the Johnson bar (think gas pedal) too heavily, wasting fuel and water and causing citizens to write letters in complaint to all sorts of people. Not good!!!! Oh yeah, the open observation car at the rear of this special is carrying the new Miss Crab Apple Blossom and her court. Wonder how they’re doing? Comments are all welcome except for any from my old physics professors. (Come on it’s been 40 years. Give me a break!)

I just remember the days of steam here.. By then they pulled freight.. My Father used to take me to a main line, where we watched them going in and out of a tunnel lol Along with massive Deltic's.. (See Wiki!) Great times.. All gone now. Excellent! Rob

I'd love to ride one of those. We have a museum railroad not far from where I live and they use a steam locomotive on it during summertime. Perhaps I take the trip this year...

I loved the way the drivers spun at start up until the engineer cracked the steam valve just right and applied some sand to get traction. Then off it would chuff gaining momentum and increasing the frequency of chuffs!! I never saw one at full speed or crossing a trestle except in pictures. I have seen narrow gauge in Colorado climbing.
